all this in my '68 lemans convertible with stock gears. i think its a 2:78 or close. wondering if adding a set of 3:73's would give good driveablilty w/under 3k @70mph

anyone with an opinion, please pass it along. i know just enough to get me hurt when it comes to engines/combos. this is mostly all stuff that was recommended by people i know. not pontiac guys. the builder has been building race engines since the 1950's but had very little knowledge about pontiacs. the dipstick tube gave him headaches. also, he wasnt very helpful in helping me pick parts. things such as cam, rods, pistons, springs, bearings, he would just tell me to order stock. wasnt much help when finishing up and id ask stuff like, what my CR and what type of gas? he'd say its stock. i dont know much, but i'd think that things like going +.030, 2 valve relief pistons, above stock cam would all have a +/- affect on the stock CR.
good news is that we're just about to try and get it started this monday, so i 've got my fingers crossed that every thing goes smoothly. I will keep informed

1972 400 block, .030 over, all edges radiused, 0 decked, 9.6:1 compression
TRW dished pistons, stock rods with ARP bolts
Crank cut .010/.010, 30 clearance on mains and rods with the rear main @ 35

Comp Cam 51-314-4 with HS 1.65 roller rockers
Hedman 1 3/4" headers with 3" collectors, 3" exhaust and Dynamax Race Turbos
Edelbrock Performer intake with 800 double pumper Holley with Percy's adjust-a-jet on both primary and secondary.
Distributor timing all in at 3000

TH400 with Redneck 3500 converter
Ford 9", 4.11s, disc brakes and blown posi.
275/60 R15 M/T DRs
Slapper bars

12.54@105mph looking for high 11s with traction. 1 wheel spinning down the track can't be a good thing

Have since installed a set of Cal-tracs and split mono springs, Detroit locker, aluminum body mounts and QA1 adjustable front shocks and 10 way Rancho rear shocks. Haven't had the car out since because I have been having fun with my low buck 55. The FB is a blast to drive on the street with 4.11s and with the choppy cam and really shiny paint it gets a lot of attention

Bought my numbers matching 68 GTO off of Ebay. I never got to talk to owner, who was out of country working and a friend was selling car for him. It is a numbers matching 400 H.O. 360H.P. with 3:91 gear and 4-speed. No power robbers at all. No PS or PB. It does have ralley dash with indash tach. Hedman headers with a Cliff reworked Qjet and a SunTuned dist. I was told the engine had just been rebuilt, but I could find no details about parts used. That has been two years ago and I have most likely put 5,000 miles on car. It runs flawlessly with no noises, no spark knocking on 92 octane. And by the way, it runs like a scalded dog to. I was very luckly as the car has no rust either. I did paint car original color. Interior was in good shape. I'll never buy another car off Ebay because I am due for a bad one after this jewel. I will stop while I'm ahead.

Cool thread.

1970 XH Block with #13 heads, bought it here off a fellow PY'er, started off looking like this:

It was refreshed prior to me getting it but had sat a while and the mice did get in so it was time to do a proper rebuild.

I tore it down, and sent the block out to be cleaned and checked, turned out we needed to bore it .030 over thanks to the mice. New freeze plugs all around, now a 406!

I had the machine shop machine and clean up the rods and press on new forged pistons (nothing fancy), new ARP studs and bearings as well.

Block came back and I assembled the rotating assembly. Crank had been turned prior and had no signs of damage as the mice only lived in two of the cylinders. So new bearings, stock crank, and a new high flow oil pump (Meiling)

Then it was time for the CAM, i went with a Crower 60242 and the matching valve train parts (springs, lifters, and caps and retainers)

Comp CAM double roller timing chain and moved onto the top end.

Heads were cleaned, magnafluxed and new guides installed. I had the machine shop set the new Ferrea valves in the heads along with the springs etc to be sure they were set at the right heights etc.

Dropped the Heads on, new 7/16 studs and locks, Crower lifters, reused the Sealed Power Push rods and stock rockers. Set the preload for all the lifters according to Jim Butler's recommendation.

Then went on the Tomahawk valley pan i bought from a PY'er as well, the petronix HEI distributor (also bought from a PY'er), Edelbrock Performer intake i had powdercoated, and on top of all of that a nice polished Holley 750 CFM new carb i scored for a song on ebay.

New Fuel pump (Carter), High flow water pump, all my alternator bracketry i had powdercoated satin black. A new harmonic balancer was installed. I rebuilt my power steering pump myself, and hooked that up after R&R'ing the power steering assembly off the frame rail and painting it machine gray, i also cleaned up the frame rail as some of the black paint was coming off.

Classic M/T valve covers installed along wiht some nice wirelooms, wires and plugs, the engine was painted Pontiac blue, and then converted to a manual flywheel i got on ebay, and a new Jegs mini starter (craigslist score) was installed. I was surprised even after all of this all i had to do to get it to fire up was rotate the distributor 180, i had it in wrong. Once that was fixed it fired right up.

I broke it in using some old headers, it sounded amazing!

Next step is to take it to the dyno and have my guy dyno tune it and set the carb if need be. Carb ran great as it is (out of the box) but i want to be sure my A/F ratios are good.

Now in the car it has Hooker Super Comp ceramic coated headers (again a PY score), the Muncie 4 speed behind it and i have to say it runs great. I was even able to get the current exhaust to line up with my headers with some mild fabrication.

I did also have to rebuild my 4 speed shifter and i verified the internals of the tranny, looked clean and no evidence of breakage.

Now looks like:

Default 560 hp 461

Here is a combo I finished a short time ago. It was for a customer that wanted a very streetable 500 horsepower in his '72 GTO. He wanted Edelbrock heads, 4-bolt mains, his choice of camshaft, and to use his 750cfm Q-jet carb. No carb spacers, no headers, no roller cam. In our various conversations and correspondence, I had the feeling he would like to "have room to grow", here is what I came up with:
  • 2 bolt main 400 block
  • Pro-Gram Engineering 4 bolt mains with ARP studs
  • Total Seal Classic rings
  • Federal Mogul bearings
  • Ohio Crankshaft internally balanced forged 4.25" rotating assembly
  • Icon dished pistons
  • Ported (in-house) 72cc Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads and intake.
  • Comp Cams 274/286 X/E flat tappet cam w/ 230/236@ .050" on a 110 LSA. .530" lift w/1.65:1 Crower stainless rockers
  • Smith Bros. 5/16" chromemoly pushrods
  • Ferrea stainless steel valves
  • Customer's out-of-the-box 750CFM Q-jet
  • Ram Air Restoration round port exhaust manifolds
  • Comp Cams roller chain

We feel the build turned out well considering the limitations. Valve float kept this engine from reaching its potential as I was leery of giving it too much valve spring pressure, still, not too bad for small flat tappet cam, ported E-heads, a 750 Q-jet, and exhaust manifolds. Shifting at 5,700 he still has a real 540hp. If he ever decides to go with headers and just a MILD hydraulic roller cam, I believe that engine will EASILY put out 600hp and keep its 750-800 rpm idle and 17" of vacuum.

My Twin turbo engine for my '63 Catalina Street Freak (Gasser).
1960 389 two bolt block. Early rear bell pattern.
.090 over 4.155 bore to 406.
Ross turbo forged 20cc dished pistons, thick walled pins.
Hellfire rings.
GRP aluminum 6.625 rods.
Ohio Forged 3.75 crankshaft, counterweights trimmed to meet balance weight.
Rotating bobweight of 1100 gms

Block filled to water holes. No lifter bore brace.
Precision Pumps 80 lb blueprinted oil pump.
Someones home made full length sumped deep oil pan with seperate cells, swing gates, small pan attached scraper and screen windage tray.
Cam is custom made turbo spec 4/7 swap solid roller, 253 int/241 exh @ .050, .601 net lift, 116 LCL, 110.75 intake CL, soft ramps for lifter bore protection.
Crower roller lifters.
Sims custom timing chain with roller cam retainer.
Custom pump drive running a Hilborn cam driven fuel pupm thru a Moon front cover.
ATi Super Damper w/crank 2 .093 spacers to move damper out away from contacting Moon cover.
Home made rear block bellhousing adaptors with home made custom starter adaptor.
Adaptor also allows all three bell bolt patterns. Early Pontiac, BOP, and Chevy.
KRE D-Port aluminum heads.
KRE ported and flowed to 319 @ 600 lift, 2.11 int/1.77 exh valves.
Scorpion 1.65 roller rockers/thick walled push rods/ stud girdle.
Wenzler early Tunnel Ram, twin 4150 top.
Twin 750 Holley/CSU blow thru carbs also converted to E85.
Twin 76 mm turbonetic ball bearing turbos.
Twin air to water intercoolers.
Intercoolers blowing into a sealed Shot Gun blower scoop for a carb (carbs) hat.
Stainless 3 tube Turbo headers are by Jeff Polazo.

I will be running a 1965-1971 Dearborn (Ford) toploader three speed trans with 2.44/1.61/1.00 gears. This trans is originally the Heavy Duty GM 3 speed (made to GM specs by Ford) installed in F,B,A bodies.
Hurst V-GAte 4 speed shifter used for the 3 speed. The V-GAte positively prevents any accidental shift into reverse.
Centerforce clutch and Lakewood blowproof bellhousing.
Final clutch type/manufacturer to be determined as needed. Will be using a hydraulic throw out bearing and pedal/master system.
Using front engine plates and rear Motor plate, no side mounts.
Engine just brought home. Still fitting all the custom adaptors and starter. Still has to be final installed (mounts made etc) in car. Still a ways away from starting up.
Engine done by Paul Carter @ Koerner Racing Engines in Tucson.
Bottom end

Early engine intake mock up.

Engine painted and mock up assembled:

Default First Gen 455 Build

Short story before I get to the drivetrain specs. Originally my wife's 69 Firebird Convertible came from the factory with the HO Six Cylinder engine but some time in it's life someone put a 350 hp, 350 CI generic GM motor in the car. We drove it and enjoyed it like that for a while but it was never very reliable. After paying good money to have the heads rebuilt to only have the bottom end start making noise shortly there after I decided to give the car back its Pontiac heart.

I am not engine builder so I contracted with Pontiac Greg at pontiacengines.net in Longmont Colorado to build a stronger than stock Pontiac 400 CI engine. Here is where the story takes an unexpected turn... Greg calls me back a couple of days later to say he found in his inventory of blocks a 1976 WX Code 455 HO Block and he would build me this for the same price as the 400. So here is the build:

455 +.040" = 464 CI
4 BBL Dual Plane Intake
Holley Street Avenger 850 CFM Carb
Felpro Neoprene Rear Main Seal
Eagle H Beam Rods
8.5 Compression @ 5000'
Ultradyne Custom Ground Cam Shaft
Kauffman D-Port Heads - Mild turn on intake & exhaust
Ferrea valves intake and exhaust
Accel Eletronic Billet MSD Blaster Coil
Hooker long length headers rest of the exhaust still to be determined.

Since this is my wife's car it is matched up to a numbers matching (1969 Firebird) TH400 Trans capable of handling 800 hp and 10 bolt 4.75 posi-traction rear end.
The car also has after market disk brakes all around and as you can see by the picture sports 15" Craegar SS wheels. These where the aftermarket wheels to have in my hs days...
I am not quite done with the install yet a few odds and ends to tie up but the inital fire up is expected within the next month. Depending on cash flow and parts availiblity that is... ;-)

I just finished up a stroker 400, going into a '68 Firebird convertible. This was a milder build, but thought it may be of interest to some.

The owner wanted the motor to look stock, so it has the iron intake, q-jet, stock 400 block, iron longbranch exhaust manifolds, along with the "16" heads. He wanted it to be mild enough to drive in traffic, but enough torque to get it moving. We were not too worried about peak hp/tq numbers, but wanted a broad & smooth powerband.

Dave @ SD Performance did the heads for us, setting them up for a hydraulic roller.

Dave Ray did one of his conversions on the stock distributor.

Dan Finn rebuilt & modified the Q-jet.

We used a forged 4.21" stroke crank, PPR's newer I-beam connecting rods (stock length), and a set of custom Race-Tec pistons. The pistons were dished, giving us a final compression ratio just over 9.0:1. The pistons also were made to use modern rings, with a 1.5/1.5/3.0mm ring package.

The cam is my design. I kept the intake duration at 224 @ .050, as my calculations showed that any larger and I would lose low-end at this compression ratio. The exhaust lobe is bigger than what I once would have selected, but again the numbers suggested it would help me extend the power band, which was one of our goals. The LSA ended up at 114.

As described above, but with 2.25" elbows coming off of the longbranch manifolds (the only pipes we had, which would mate to the dyno's exhaust system), this combo made 494.6lb-ft @ 3600rpm and 408.8hp @ 4900rpm. Torque was 485.8 @ 3100 (where the dyno started reading), stayed above 480 until past 4000, and was still 413.8 @ 5100 (where we ended the pull). HP hit 401.8 @ 4600, and was 401.8 @ 5100.

The motor also idled nicely at 690rpm! The owner picked up the motor today, and should have it in his car soon.

Default 450+hp 461

Here's a build I just completed some of you may find interesting. It is a typical 461 shortblock with a cast crank, forged rods and pistons, bearing oil hole mods, etc. The top end consisted of bowl ported and raised roof 4x's tapped for screw in studs, lightweight retainers, a stage 2 cam with 1.5 rockers, ported and separated RPM and an 800 cfm Edelbrock. The customer wanted it for his '69 GTO with 3.55's. Slight lump in the idle at 700 rpm. I think he will like it. Ten degrees initial had it purring and 16 gave it some attitude. He'll find what it/he likes best. At 9:1, 34 degrees total should be more than enough. Here's a link for more specs http://www.sandovalperformance.com/#...galleryv2128=1
