Hi all,
Just got back from the "Councours D'Elegance" car show in Cincinnati. I was very surprised to see (and finally meet) Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialties. He brought the coolest car (I thought) of the show: a '63 SD 421 Tempest station wagon. I think he just finished the restoration for his customer who was also at the show. Here's more info from the documentation that I saw: 421 Super Duty 405 HP 4-Speed Power Shift trans-axle Hydraulic operated dry clutch Heavy-duty axle shafts Aluminum components: brake drums, hood, front fenders, grill surround, valence panel, radiator supports, radiator Tri-toned bucket seat interior Also on the info card: "Pontiac Motor Division produced 6 of these cars for A/FX drag racing before the corporate ban on racing in Feb. of '63. This is the only documented survivor at this time" Towards the end of the show the show organizers wanted him to move the car so I got to hear it run. All I can is WOW!! It was the nastiest sounding engine I've ever heard (nasty = GOOD). Heads turned real quick with open headers! Here are some pics ...

Always like to see them 63's.Scott had done Randy Williams car a couple years ago he ran it at Norwalk with Arnie driving andRandy riding shot gun.

I believe those pix are of The Randy Williams car that Scott finished a few years ago. Randy passed away last year and the car is owned by his widow,Jean.
I was the one that sold that car to Randy over 20 years ago and am just thrilled how it came out.I ran my first race 4cyl in that car around 1970. |

A stupid question ... why were all the Super Duty cars wagons? Why not coupes?

Yes, Pontiac literature at the time touted the weight-distribution advantage of the wagons for drag racing. I seem to remember some reports of good drag results- don't remember seeing one in person- but drivetrain reliability wasn't good.
Thanks for the pictures! #3 is interesting- I'd never seen the bottom of the "bathtub" manifold before!

I bought the car in 69 or 70. It was originally the Union Park Pontiac car driven by Harold Ramsey. I sold it to Randy around 1982. I regreted selling it for a long time until Scott restored it and I felt that I could have not put the necessary resources into it that Randy had. They did a great job as the car was in rough shape when I sold it and the transaxle had been long gone.

The car was owned by Mike Garfinkle and in the Chicago area. I had earlier purchased the Pete Seaton Swiss Cheese Catalina from Mike [for $725 without drivetrain]. I bought the wagon less engine for $600.
