Battery Tie Down Nut
Looking for the nut that secures the battery tie down in place. Its black phos with a washer pressed in that spins freely. Was used in 73 and I would imagine other years too but not sure which ones to be honest?
I can post a picture if more detail is needed ? Thanks for any and all help! Brew |

No thats not it however I have that and when I find the correct nut washer combo its available
The one Im looking for has a pressed on washer that spins freely from the nut. Its plated similar to the fender bolts which I think is just gray phosphate? Appreciate the help! Brewster |

Oh ok, so your ok with pawning off a beautiful, but incorrect nut down stream as soon as you find the 'correct' one. That's additional motivation to keep searching right there
Besides, you know the saying.... 'If Tieman puts it on his restoration, it MUST be right' See if you can find it on this link. Try page 53, maybe B-12840? http://amkproducts.com/Catalog_PDF/39-55.pdf

Hi Brew, do you have a picture of the nut your looking for?
I have an AMK bolt order going in on Monday. Since they have a $30 min charge, if any of the nuts they have look like they may work, I'll be glad to pick one up with the order, and send it your way.

I got home last night and plan on checking the cars today. Will take a picture (or two) and post them up for review.
Your catalog has the correct looking item however the plating is different and I know that can be stripped and change too. Would like to find an original but will have you order a few in the mean time till I can locate one. Thanks! Brew |

Pictures
Here is a couple shots to review. The washer and nut are pressed together allowing the washer to spin freely.

Hi Brew, from the looks of that picture, it looks more like a painted coating than a black phosphate.
What is the diameter of the washer? I measured the impression in my original hold down and it measures right at 13/16". I found the most unusual note stamped in the bottom side of the hold down! If your original washer is close to 3/4" then B12837 may be a closer fit than the other two nuts mentioned earlier. Finally, I don't have the original hold down bolt (there was all-thread holding the battery hold down). I'd like to confirm the nut is 5/16" - 18. Once we confirm which is the best nut based on your original, if you'd like, I'd be glad to include a few of these nuts for you in my AMK order while '72Formula looks for some originals. What are your thoughts?

Craig is correct on his description so you might as well get a few for the crew!
Also your right as its not plated gray phos but appears to be painted? who else has one to compare? |

OK, I'll be glad to order a few of these. We just need to confirm which nut.
These two options are what it's narrowed down to. Both are 5/16 - 18. B12837 - has a .75" diameter washer B12342 - has a 1.12" diameter washer Brew, can you measure the outside diameter of yours? I forgot to include my pictures of my hold down in my previous post, so here they are. The diameter of the impression is 13/16". The interesting note on the bottom side of the hold down is "This Side Up", written backwards.... But after giving it some thought, that may have been a note on the battery that impressioned into the rubber. I can't imagine someone needing that note on a battery when installing it, ha. I'll be glad to get several for each of you, so just let me know if you want the .75 or 1.12" nut, or both. I'm going to call in the bolt order tomorrow, so if possible, please place your orders today! The Eastwood phosphate coating I used on the bumper brackets is pretty close to that color, and may work, so that's how I'll probably be treating them. Now... about that 'wrong' nut that might be available

Just for the fun of it, I took a couple of nuts and sprayed the eastwood phosphate on them. Then, on the one on the left I sprayed clear coat to give it some shine. It still wasn't dark enough, so then I dusted it with OER low gloss black.

Must have revised during the '73 model year.
Looks like the '74 nut, GM 489090. Washer is conical and approx. 0.75" in diameter. Good luck finding a correct one. |
