Im thinking the next step is putting it on a rotisserie. I was trying to avoid that, but the car really deserves it. Plus it'll allow me to get the bottom painted up and detailed nicely.

Just got the engine back from the rebuilders. Came out real nice! Got the flywheel resurfaced while it was there too.
Should I use something like a fogging oil to keep the internals from rusting? The engine likely wont be in the car until early next year, so I don't want any rust forming in the cylinders. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Update:
The car is on the rotisserie. Just got back from blasting, and actually doesn't look awful. There's still metal to weld to, so that's nice. We have all the sheetmetal. Ordered it ahead of time. There's no shortage of it. lol ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That looks pretty dang good to me. Doesn't appear to be any major damage, should be fairly straight forward.
On the engine, my suggestion is to add oil, go a quart over, and prime it, turning the crank 90 degrees ever 3-5 min of priming. Tape up the openings of the intake, and bag it. If you wanted to go the extra mile, charcoal in gym socks or on a pie pan in the bag w the engine will help absorb any excess moisture. And of course, make sure it has spark plugs in it. No, it won't wash off all the assembly lube that was used, it leaves a film on the required surfaces longer than most think. .

The floor is completely in, as well as the firewall. Getting started on the rear half now.

Hope you save those quarter parts that were cut out. The one side looked great in person. Looking better every time!
DONT loose that part on the tail panel below the gas fill. That is commonly misplaced when a tail pan is done, and it is Not repoped. Good luck @!

Progress is moving along after a little break. It's really coming together now. Doing the final fitment tweaks before finish welding.
Also was cleaning up the rear axle, and managed to get a pic of the stamping on it. Slightly hard to read in the pic, but it is: COZ 0312G. If I'm decoding it correctly, it was built March 12th by Detroit Gear and Axle. Pretty cool, as the car is a 03C build. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice work! Did you buy that body cart, or make it yourself?

I don't know much about it. It looks like most of it was made commercially, but has some modifications done to fit our older cars better.

Just found this thread and read through it all. Great story! Congrats on this find! What made you go from survivor to body off?

Well, it's been a while since I updated this thread...
Long story short, the guy who was helping me with the metal work turned out to be a total hack. The rear quarters were nowhere near close to fitting correctly, the rockers weren't done correctly, the firewall took an ass whooping from an air hammer, amongst a ton of other issues. It wasn't good. I have it all documented via a ton of pics and measurements. Now, before my stress levels continue to rise talking about that fat ass, I have good news! The 70 is in great hands at a shop in NH, that is well known to turn out some incredible cars. They're actually working on another 70 RAIII in white on tan. So here's a pic of how she currently sits. Pulled the quarters back off, pulled the roof skin, and sent the car out to blasting. Then put it in the booth and sprayed the first round of red oxide primer on the skeleton, so once the new panels go on, everything behind them is well protected.

Sorry to hear those setbacks.
At least you found a good shop that is willing to take it forward. |

He will. His shop is staffed with some of the most talented, professional people I've ever met. They've already gone above and beyond for me, and are doing killer work.
Just for reference, here's the trunk gaps the last body guy was responsible for. Yes the trunk lid was bolted on, and yes, the quarters were welded on like that:

Looks about like what a friend of mine got back after having a 1 piece rear clip section from a 4 door tempest installed on a 2 door GTO that was nailed hard in the azz.
Hard to comprehend how some people can get a result like that and think its going to be okay. Maybe if it were a weekend circle track race car. |
