My concern was that STP likely lowered their zddp levels if they were sold for passenger cars I used up my last bottle of EOS and the newer price is real high. I use VR 1 or old Rotella prior to the new formulation. This seems like an easy cost effecteive way to simply use convetional oil and still provide protection for flat tappet cams. How much ZDDP is "too much".

Yes they did lower the ZDDP level in STP. 1-5% from the latest company data sheets. Not high as previously, but still somewhat useful. Wish I had saved it ... I looked up the STP sheets about 6-7 years ago and could swear it was around 10% back then. The 4-cylinder stuff in the red bottle, which they have since discontinued, was much lower.

I wonder if adding some EP gear oil would give you enough of the anti scuffing properties needed in flat tappet cams? Probably no one is ever going to recommend it though, but I'm just wondering if that would work?

My initial mechanical experiences came on Chevy stuff. I bought my T/A the month I graduated from high school (yeah, I bought it, not my daddy...LOL). I worked on my first car (67 Bel Air, 4 door) essentially reworked the whole car. Had the 283 rebuilt by a REAL engine builder, even had the engine dyno'd (yeah, believe that, or not...LOL).
I was working on Chevy stuff, driving my T/A, while it had low miles...now everything has too many miles, and needs work...

Seems like there's so many know-it-alls on the Chevy site. Man, the Edelbrock carb craze over there, is insane. I know they CAN be made to work (not, always, my opinion),
and if I make a post somewhere, it might be 2 or 3 pages back before I get to look at the other repsonses, yee ha. If I ever see another lowered pickup or one w/ a LS engine in it, I think I could barf.

I was lookng for a pickup in 1980, just got some tax refund $$$ back, found one, just wanted a pickup, expecting one like yours, went and looked at it, it was rough (still is, I'm still gathering parts, and $$$) had a 396 TH400 in it, I nearly crapped. I'm prepping a 67 before the 68, hope I live long enough to get them all done... LOL

I bought some of that GM EOS??? does it have much zinc in it???

For me it started when my Dad bought a '69 GTO for $300 that someone had traded in at the dealer. Sister totaled it a few weeks later. Bought my 1st GTO ('70 ram air) when I graduated high school. Then I got hooked on Pontiacs when I switched from tool & die machinist to automotive. Went diesel and worked for CAT after that. Couldn't agree more about the Chevy guys and the forums. I basically stopped giving engine building advice on them. It took me nearly 2 years searching to find this truck. Seller said everyone passed it up because of the 6-cyl. Glad I got a step side. Very utilitarian.

Back to the topic at hand ... not sure how much ZDDP is in the GM EOS. Sure we could pull up a MSDS. Then again the #'s can be vague. A lot of the builders on the forum swear by it. As you probably know, EOS = engine oil supplement. GM pulled it for a time, then re-listed it as an "assembly lube". Anything to get passed the EPA. Oh, someone asked how much ZDDP is too much. Seems I read somewhere 1,200-ppm is about the max, where oil levels were before all the ZDDP reduction started. Beyond that it starts to get corrosive.
