If it cheap enough....YES! It needs a good home.

It would be helpful to know if it was rain water or sea water....potentially a huge difference in the damage

Assume the transmission got filled with water and may be junk
Assume a lot of electrical stuff might be compromised
Assume the carpet and maybe the seat foam is moldy junk
Assume the body is starting to rust in every nook and cranny
Assume that the engine was run with a mix of oil and water in it.

It also depends on your end goals. Full restoration or a driver?

JMHO,
Eric

16” of water should be pretty repairable from recent flooding. The longer it sits the worse it will get. 16” would be below a lot of electrical items, even below the engines top end. Might not have got into the tranny either if it the water level was below the case vent.

FWIW, speaking from experience of owning a first gen that was completely submerged for about a day in fresh water. I bought my car in 1978, and sold it in 2019, I plunged a ton of money into it and it was always something due to water, rust, mechanical, or electrical.

The electrical will always be an issue as time passes. The old first gens also had a lot of bare metal in all the pinch welds and overlapping sheet metal throughout the body. Rust was always popping up in strange places.

The T-400 needed a complete overhaul even after drain and flushes, the sealing rings went to hell. The engine rings never sealed, and the engine had a considerable amount of blowby.

I only paid $800 when I bought it, but likely had 10 times that much in it when I sold it. I did every bit of the mechanical work on it and a friend replaced a lot of the body panels with new GM parts back in the late 70s and painted it. We traded labor, so I never really paid him any cash.

I wouldn't ever do it again with a valuable collectable car, maybe a cheap daily driver that was only a piece of transportation, but it was like buying a boat, it was a hole to throw money through. I was under the illusion that I had worked on, or replaced almost everything in it, but it never ended.

BTW, the car only had 17,000 miles on it when I bought it in 78, so it wasn't a daily driver through winters before I bought it. The low miles didn't mean anything after it was wet.

I've delt with them. I have no issues with flood cars. I strip the interior out, and power wash both inside and out.

Of all the things old cars experience, water is the least of my concern. Even salt water is fine, just clean everything well.

Another caution is your health. Contact and inhalation issues are well documented in the automotive repair field.

~1985; Bought a 68 GTO with a 428 from a Daytona Beach owner, it had a tidal flooding up to the door panel carpet. It has white powder along the floor edges when i got it.

Drove it from Fla to PA, replaced the carpet, cleaned the tail harness, washed the door panel carpet, and no related issues.

Well the lower Rad support did rot.Motor and trans mount rotted. Rear suspension bushings went to urethane. Front bushings and sway bar went urethane.
