HEI for the OHC a "Must do"
Ahem, er well check your Dwell with RPM and like any OHC-6 engine the Dwell is probably going bad above 4500 RPM, or sooner if it's real worn.
The old-school "must-do" was to install a Mallory Dual-Point (been there, done that). To awaken your OHC-6 SPRINT & regular 1BBL engine; I recommend grafting an HEI onto an OHC-6 Distributor casting. Several steps involved here. Obtain an HEI 6-CYL core (even-fire) and a SPARE OCH-6 dist core, dis-assemble them down to basic parts. ================================================== =========== HEI CUP to OHC-6 CUP: Cut the HEI stem from cup enough so it can sit flush on-top of the OHC-6 Cup. Install along dizzy shaft for assured alignment, then spot-drill the HEI base for the 4-OHC-6 Cap screws. This will be how the HEI is mechanically grafted to the Points Body. Clean the parts, lube the shaft bushings with wheel bearing grease, install the HEI base to the OHC-6 Base with 4-screws. ================================================== =========== Distributor Shaft: Basic goal is to retain the OHC-6 Drive gear feature and the HEI Advance weight feature. I forget what I did exactly, but you can figure out how it goes with the parts you have. I probably put the HEI top bar onto the OHC-6 Shaft. ================================================== =========== Populate the HEI base with HEI parts. Install onto engine, Spark suppression plug wires & .045" plug gaps fine. Be sure the +12Volt Ignition wire is all copper, without any ballast Resistor. Set timing and report back on how much better it starts, idles, runs and WOTs. HIS |

Will any OHC distributor work in this application? Where is the best place to buy a conversion kit at?

I have a few aftermarket distributors,Mallory dual points(which I used for years)
and a real rare Mallory electronic. Also a GM CDI and TI. Are the GM HEIs better?

I had a pair of Mallory Dual-Points, and bakelite coils, too, and the Mark 10B CDI. HEI remains fool-proof in comparison. (I recall that one of the dualpoints may have had got oil-fouled from oil accumulating in the cup (blowby outlet?)

Difficult aspect is finding the Even-fire HEI. [kudos to formulaBruce] the Chevy Truck HEI source is a better idea than what I found; an even-fire Buick (or Olds). See, all you need is the 6-pint Reluctor assembly, and you can graft-on Advance weights of your liking ( just keep the Rotation same-to-same). |

I've been using the Pertronix conversion for almost 20 years with no problems other than the long cranking time. Ran 12 Volts tothe dizzy instead of resistor wire. I wrapped the 2 wires from the pick-up tot he coil as that is the only external clue from stock points.

I did a Pertronix on my OHC and it just seemed to take longer to start than a HEI. Aside from carb dry possibilities. The HEI made my OHC a bit more "snappy" off the line.

Tom Landon of Stovebolt Performance Made a few HEI Conversions fo OHC-6's in the late 80's, I have 1 on my 69 FB 301 Stroker, and one sitting on a spare engine. One is a large style from a 70-s Chevy I-250, and the other one is the shorter (but still large dia. from a V-6 from the 80's) He may be will to do more if he has a dist to modify. Good Guy, retired GM Engineer, and he has a 68 FB CV OHC-6 car also.
http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/ He is reasonable and will work with almost anyone.

camerjeff, decent site.
I went with the Coil-in-Cap HEI both times. And yea, the External coil HEI is more "OHC-6" styled. |

I have a dumb question. Would a hotter coil help out at all? Many years ago I removed a non-working system that was called Mark Ten which was an after market install. In HS I installed an Excell Super Coil (?) or something like that. No memery if it ever helped.
thoughts? |

Yea, I 'm reminded of Post #6. I tried the Mark 10B on the OHC-6 ( probably with a Mallory Dual-Point), and then on the PMD V8. Either way I could not tell the Mark 10B was helping or not. Only recall hearing the buzz it made. 1/4miled the Dual-point on the V8, then went to HEI, & made HEI my benchmark. |

This fella prefers HEI too, yet convinces me that the Pertronics is 1000% easier to get done. ( From the OHC rebuild thread):

why not just use a crank trigger and COP

Yea sure. Point of this thread is to retire the Points & mounting plate within the OHC-6 Distributor.

OHC HEI
I have another question about HEI.
I have A/C, and the stock points style distributor sits pretty close to the aluminum compressor mounting bracket. I have a few 70's 6 cylinder HEI distributors I would sacrifice to have them adapted for an HEI conversion, but don't know if they would fit? I can't tell right now since my motor is at the machine shop getting freshened up. Jeff, you also have A/C. Does it look like the larger HEI cap would fit? Thanks, Ron
