I acquired a parts car that has the optional digital clock (over the glove box). This requires a special "Grand Prix" plate for the clock.
This one has four little vertical slots just to the left of the "Grand Prix".
The plate w/o the clock doesn't have these, and I haven't seen the slots in pictures (although they may be doctored photos).
I'm thinking they may be for ventilation, cause the clock does have a light bulb, and I guess heat could accumulated behind the dash.
Anybody have this, or have ideas?

I have a 80 Grand Prix. These slots you refer to are for ones that have the climate control A/C with the thumb wheel. This was for temperature sensing to draw air in to control fan speed.
Did parts car have climate control A/C ?

Sorry for the delay in responding.
There's not enough G-Body posts to check every day.
Anyway, no.... the parts car has a regular A/C system. Doesn't sound like thats the answer.
My plate is black, cause it's from a 78.
Is your plate like in the picture, but with vents, and you have the auto temp unit?

Nice picture , even with the raindrops.
I guess we haven't resolved anything. You have the same plate as mine, but we have the diff A/C units. I thought maybe since the clock has a lamp, the vents help alleviate any buildup of heat. Farfetched? None of the dealer sales brochures I've looked at show the vents, maybe theyre airbrushed away.
I notice the "litter container" as GM calls them....nice touch.

I had another look and the sensor is behind there.
The litter container is original. I have no idea how rare it is...but never seen another one on any 78-80 GP's. Maybe I am not looking hard enuff !

Pontiyak....you are so right.

I bought a 79 shop manual supplement.
It shows a bunch about the Automatic A/C unit and actually has a pic of the dash plate with the vents with an annotation "Sensor" with a pointer pointing to the vents.
So somehow this parts car got it's black plate switched I guess.
Anything new with your GP?

Just getting it ready for spring. Way behind schedule this year been working on GTO .
I drive the GP only a bit...usually only 500 miles a year. Kinda sad I know !
I will post a complete pix of 80 GP real soon.

My '80 Grand Am das looks just like the one in pontiyaks GP, beaurdeaux and all! My clock runs sporatically and my interior light doesn't work. The fuse was blown so I replaced it. Now the key buzzer works but not the dome or trunk lights, both bulbs are new.

in my 79 Lj, the trim plate on the dash also has the slots for the auto temp sensor, but it doesn't have the automatic climate control. As far as i know, the piece is original. Maybe they just used what was available. Also, i have one of the litter baskets in my car. I swear my car should be an Sj instead of an Lj because of the way it's optioned, but it isn't. By the way pontiyak, very nice looking car. How do those viscount seats hold up?

Also, does anyone have any kind of idea of a color and interior number breakdown? My car is black with black cloth buckets. One would think black interior would be common, but i've seen more other colors(especially red) than anything else. Also, i wonder how many double two-tonje cars were made. A lady here has a green/white like the Lj ad cars, but with the hubcaps instead of wire wheels, with a green interior. I had a black 78 Sj with red buckets/black vinyl top, my friend has a green 78 with goldish tan bench, and i saw a burgundy 78 with burgundy top not long ago, looked like it might have had the beaurdeaux interior. What does everyone else have?

Hey Heff :
Seats have held up quite well they are still original leather and of course drivers side shows some wear.
I have a only seen 1 black car that has black cloth interior . It was a 79 LJ with t-bars. I have a fiend that has a 80 LJ with black interior also. But it is quite uncommon. Most all had gold or red on black cars.
As far as breakdown I do not know of one....but would be nice to know.
