Default 2014 Exploder

My mother in law just inherited her father's '14 exploder. It's an XLT with a 3.5L V6 and 4x4. It has 170K on it. It runs/drives great for the mileage we are trying to decide whether or not to keep it. I'm wondering if this is a good drivertrain and if there are any inherent problems that we should avoid (sell car). I'd love to hear any opinions on this thing good or bad. Thanks.

We bought a 2012 Taurus new with that engine, put 120k or so miles on it over seven years, and had no problems anywhere with that car. Of course that's 50k fewer miles than your car has. I would venture that Ford has built millions of that engine and its variants over the years now.

On the earlier 3.5's.... and possibly the later ones.. If the water pump goes out it will puke water into the crankcase

My '11 Lincoln MKX did that. A bearing divides the coolant from the crankcase oil. When it failed the crankcase oil turned to chocolate milkshake and the car overheated. The repair was very expensive and tied up the car for a week. Then they have to run the car with new oil and drain it 3 times.

That was about 110,000 miles. Car still runs well now at 143,000.

IIRC... The water pump is driven off the timing chain. Its about 11hrs book time to change it.

It’s free. It’s proven. It drives good.
Why wouldn’t you keep it?

I have a 15 sport. Bought new. Admittedly, It's had it's share of smaller issues, but nothing major yet.
Initially I thought I didn't like it much, but it has really grown on me lately. It's a comfortable and good handling long distance driving SUV. Plenty of room, good features and you sit up high.
I say go for it. No reason not to.
