Default MegaSquirt TBI EFI ?'s

I have been thinking for a while that I would like to intall an EFI on my 455. Rather than installing a sequential port, I think a TBI would better suit my needs. Mainly because it is cheaper and easier to install, I already have a ported intake, blah blah blah.

Is a TBI worth the trouble? I figure it wouldnt be too expensive or time intensive to get it working and it would probably be alot of fun. Is anybody out there running one of these? Suggestions?

There has been a lot of discusion about megasquirt and EFI in general on this board. Do a search on EFI. Lots of good photos too.

I didnt see one discussion about sequential vs TBI. Benefits/tradeoffs, etc. I guess I'll google for it.

Megasquirt only supports bank-to-bank or batchfire. No sequential injection and I dont think there will be for the v3.0 (maybe later versions?).

TBI should work fine if you have big enough injectors, remembery you're only playing with 4, not 8. But a well prepped carb should work just as good too.

I've setup Megasquirt on my 400 to control the ignition timing only with a HEI 7pin module until I have all the parts to control fuel aswell. I'm going to modify a tomahawk manifold for 8 x 440cc injectors.

So far i'm very impressed with Megasquirt! And the fact it didn't cost me $583498573489 like some other ECU's is a double bonus!

The first limitation you'll generally run into with TBIs are their airflow capabilities. Assuming you're considering going with something like the 454 Chevy TBI, your airflow capacity is about 670 CFM. Not a big deal on a mostly stock engine. But, it could be a problem if you've made some bigger changes. Holley sells a 4-bbl version of TBI. That's supposed to flow 1000 CFM. I'm not too familiar with Megasquirt to know whether or not it has the built-in capability of running 4 TBI style injectors. I'm a bigger fan of retrofitting an older GM ECM into the system and saving a couple of bucks!

I don't think you'd notice much of a difference between TBI and PFI. Once reasonably tuned, they should work very much like one another.

Cool Krisr and Megasquirt

I am jealous, as I am trying to work my way to the same setup.

I am figuring I can get it done for under $1600 or so. Similar injectors (42#) and intake.

I am going the edis route for ignition, and have some crazy idea about being able to run carb or port injection, ecu controlled ignition or distributor, all at the switch of about 2 switches.

Not sure if it is sane, but it has me totally tricked into thinking I can pull it off, and on or under budget.

Here is a pic of my trigger wheel.
