Default split exhaust tips mounting

I'd like to mount some splitter exhaust tip on my 81. I think I remember hearing that there is a certain way they mount. a specific angle and distance from the bumper ? anyone know what I'm talking about ?

There's basic measurements in manuals, original cars with splitters often also have matching dents. Stock diameter only, anything larger is a custom angle and location.

26 degrees outwards on this original exhaust.

There is also an angle down vs parallel with fender or ground.

that helps. I have a 2.5" types exhaust. I guess I can just customize and do what looks good but I'd like to get it as close to what stock would look like if I can.

Yes, if the tailpipe is generally parallel at the trunk then the splitter tip angle will taper off to match the angle of the trunk drop-offs where that poke out. I have the Pypes 2.5" tips and they were able to be matched and the originally distance back, just not the angle outwards due to clearance.

2 more pics that were meant to be part of the angled-out pics previously.

And Pypes 2.5" showing only slight turn-out but matched to angled of fender base.

you guys posting the recommended angles, too bad the guys on the assembly line never saw those dimensions. those were at any angle from straight down to rubbing the quarter panel when they were new.

Exactly why the photos and measurements are a guide only of what may be typical, and of course the limitations when you try to make it 'look the same' with large diameter pipes with less clearance. I measured nothing in the end, lined them up with the dents.
