65 vs 66 Tri-Power
Questions,
Are they interchangeable? I think the center carb flange is larger, is that true? Is there an adapter plate if running a '65 smaller center carb? I have a '65 GTO, and I want to get a new tri-power intake and port the intake runners to match the #48 heads and intake gaskets (Fel Pro 1233), which are RAIV size. I want to do it on a new one, so I don't have any down time on my car. Thanks, Brent

Tri-Power intake identification. Yes the 1966 intake is unique in that it uses all 3 large base Rochester carbs unlike the 1965 which uses a small base center carb. The 1966 also uses a different choke setup, it has a thermostatic choke coil that mounts directly on the exhaust crossover unlike the 1965 which uses choke tubes and a choke coil mounted on the carb itself. So it’s not quite as simple as using an adapter plate.

You can use the '66 aluminum repro intake. There are dual-mounting patttern Rochester 2 barrels used in big Pontiacs in the early '60's. I have several of them, which will bolt onto the '66 intake, but use the same choke, fuel lines, etc. as the '65 setup.
PM me for for details.

I think I'll just wait to find a '65. I want to port the intake runners to match my #48 heads and Fel Pro 1233 gasket, which I think are RAIV size. I want to leave the one on my car stock, so I'll get a new one to do the porting then swap it over.

I have a few of the throttle bodies that would work to put your smaller center carb on a '66 intake without an adaptor. That would be the easiest way to go if you already have a '66 intake. If not, I have six '65 intakes if you can't find one.
FWIW, the venturi size on the "small" '65 center carb is actually larger than the OEM '66 center carb.--1.250" vs. 1.180". Obviously, the throttle plates are smaller on the '65, but the smallest restriction, the venturi's, are larger in '65.

I thought those double drilled bases were used on big cars when an "economy" option single carb was ordered, and it got a smaller venturi than even the 65 and earlier center carb.

You’re correct. Most of the “ economy carbs I have use the same 1.250” Venturi’s as the correct center ‘61 to ‘65 center carb.
In fact, the dual pattern base can be used with the correct Tri-Power center carb. You do need to use the “economy” fast idle cam assembly.
