Default Rope seal blocks and alternatives

Did all blocks come machined from the factory to use a rope seal? I have a '66 421 block but the groove doesn't look wide enough for a rope seal.

The blocks with 3.25" mains like your 421 use a narrower rope seal than the 3" main blocks.

Quite a few blocks have been cracked in that area (the back end of the seal area cracks out) from trying to use the 3" seal in a 3.25" block.

The groove looks v-shaped (not u-shaped like on my 3" main block) and too narrow to fit a rope seal. There was a plastic seal in there when i took it apart. When it goes back together, I would like to use the graphite rope seal by Best Gasket or a NOS asbestos seal.

I probably have a NOS seal for ya. I'll check in the morning and let you know.
