Default Clutch return spring and headers

In the service manual it says to hook one end of the spring to the fork and the other end to the exhaust manifold flange which apparently has a provision for it. Since I am running headers where should I hook the other end of the clutch
Spring?

When we had headers on my wife’s 65, I welded a washer to one of the tubes to hook the spring to. Not the most elegant solution I suppose but it worked for as long as we kept the headers.

When my 66 had headers, I want to say the spring went over to the frame. You may need to try a different length spring to find something that works.

They sell a tab actually for this problem I just found but my headers are coated so I want to avoid this. May try to weld the tab to the frame unless someone has the “right” solution

I couldn’t find a place on the frame to get a good angle on the spring to the fork. Let us know what you come up with.

I made a short leader out of thin galv cable with a loop on both ends. Put one end on one of the motor mount bolts and hooked the spring in the other end. Works perfect. It's not permanent and it'll never rust out.

On the Chevrolets many times they go to the motor mount, and the mount has a small tab for it.
To do this is a 2 part deal. The motor mount half is just a steel wire with specific bends and that is really easy to slide through or between header tubes, then it's just a typical short spring from the fork to the rod so the spring works without header interference. All that stuff is reproduced for various cars. Probably easily adaptable to Pontiacs as well. Clean and simple.

I would like to see a photo of the "provision" on the exhaust manifold flange where it is supposed to attach. I'm waiting on a set of ram air manifolds, and I wonder if they have such a provision.

It’s not in the manifold it’s on the flange and no your not gonna have it cause ram air manifolds are not 64 pieces

We switched to Ram Air manifolds. As 64speed said they have no provisions for the spring. I made a little tab that I put under one of the flange bolts. I used a universal spring that I found in the “Help” section at the parts store. I was unable to use a stock spring. Working fine so far.

If I remember correctly, the sliding flange on the drivers side exhaust head pipe had a drilled hole for the spring coil "hook" to be inserted into it for the 67 Ram Air Manifolds.

I will have to look at the two sets of 67 Ram Air Head Pipes and see if my memory is correct.

Course this does nothing for 64speed's headers and the fact he doesn't want to add a tab (with a hole in the correct spot) for the clutch spring to his headers.

I will probably end up adding a tab

Putting a tab on a header tube will probably get you the best geometry for the spring vs the other components on the clutch system.

I have ram air manifolds on my 65 LeMans so I used a hole that was in the z bar and ran a spring back to the clutch fork. It’s just some universal spring from the parts store and a bit of time to get the length and spring rate right. I should mention, also needed a spring under the dash to keep the pedal at the top of its travel doing it this way.

Old school solution was using a hose clamp around a header tube to retain the other end of the spring.

Can anyone post a diagram of the 66 linkage? I am afraid this is one of those things that’s gonna have to be done on the lift

Here you go. The return spring attaches to the floorboard. I couldn’t get it done with the exhaust and all already in.

Should be able to. I had 3 inch head pipes & an adjustable proportioning valve in the way.

Good luck!
