Default What GM cars after 1972 got dual snorkel air cleaners?

I found one of these in a parts pile at a farm. It has dual snorkels with wide mouths and Ac thermac doors on each snorkel. They are 1973 or later as it seems the mouths are too wide. driver side looks like it was tooled for a cloth air duct. Another weird thing, this air cleaner has a serious drop base inside. Got to be three and half inches minimum at the front. Pan at rear looks like its tooled for HEI coil. Has a rolled lip underneath, The Keep your GM car All GM was rattle can sprayed black but I cleaned it off with toluene and revealed this two lettter code CU and part number 6485241. Anyone have an idea what this came out of? Car, truck? hearse? Mud Bogger?

Hey DRI, your comment got me wondering. I decided to go reproduction decal hunting using that CU code and part number. Came up Camaro SS 396 from 1970-72. I'd say the air cleaner is 72 judging from the dual thermo doors. First one I've ever seen for a Camaro from that era. Needs cleaning but otherwise solid. Thanks for the tip.

Corvettes also had dual snorkle air cleaners on L-82's until 79 or 80.

Cool Also...

the Z-28's until '74, I believe. Last year they got the forged piston /steel crank engines and I'm relatively certain they still got the aluminum high-rise intake. After their return in '77...they were just a decal package with stiffer shocks. Ron

The 77's got stiffer decals and packaged shocks...LOL

I was considering a Z28 when I bought my T/A. 77 Z28's were nothing, even compared to my base 180 HP T/A...

Here's the air cleaner I was asking questions about.... according to label it is a 1972 SS 396 Camaro unit. Not many made, this one was for a no A/C car. Label said CU.

Though this air cleaner shown is a Chevy unit, the Oldsmobile Hurst/ Olds in 1983-84 had a dual snorkel, as well as the 1985-1987 442, on the 307.

I actually made on out of two air cleaners I installed on a friend of mine's '76 Camaro when I was in high school. I had installed a SB 400 in there for him in place of the lame 305 that it came with. I then took the 305s air cleaner (2bbl) and removed the snorkel off of it. I took the air cleaner that came off the '75 Monte Carlo the engine came out of (same style air cleaner-and looked like the one you have here from what I remember) and marked a place to install the snorkel where it would clear everything on the car. Then I cut a hole out with a small cutting wheel, and tacked the snorkel on. then I painted the whole thing semi gloss black. Came out pretty well and looked like a factory peice.

Believe I've seen a Chevy dual snorkel aircleaner before with those style snorkels. Maybe in an old Cars magazine article, maybe at a swapper. The Camaro BBC dual snorkel aircleaner I have is for a '70 or 71. Thought it was also used on '72 Z28, maybe not? It is the Chevy deep drop base with clearance for a double hung Holley, the same wire mesh vent, but has the small non thermac snorkels

Whats the deal with the snorkels & strip caulk?
I have '71-72 HO RA breather that had a similar repair. Had a lot of fun taking the snorkel apart, so I could hammer/dolly/shrink a v'ed down dent in the top of one of the snorkels. tookn a while but got it out

The 80's dual snorkel GM aircleaners that goatwgn & I mention are easy to spot as the base is like an '81 Trans Am base, set-up for the small (12") diam aircleaner & with the step for the silencer ring. Used get a big laugh out of their design.

No strip caulk that I'm aware of Roger, on the underside someone used two part epoxy and a piece of tin to block off one door. MIght be factory. The valve is fine inside. Would just have to remove that epoxy, a dremel tool would do it. That air cleaner just came out of the soda blasting booth. The air cleaner is going to need rechroming if someone wants to use it for originality. The rest of the light colored stuff is just braze from the factory tack welding.
