Default TH 400 from '74 Grandville fit in '65 Catalina?

Since the TH 400 in my 65 Cat seems to have some serious trouble (only 1st and reverse available, 3rd and now also 2nd gone, whining noise), I will have to pull and rebuilt it... Now I have the option to buy a BOP bolt pattern TH 400 out of a '74 Grandville, that I could put in the car until I have the other trans rebuilt...
My question: Will the newer TH 400 fit in my car without any modifications?

Thanks, Helge

It will fit like a glove.

Whining noise might just be a filter. But you may be happier with the later transmission

And I'll add that even though you said you wanted to rebuild your old one, unless you drive like a mad your replacement might never have to be replaced back to the old one. My advise is do the swap and just hang on to the old one and save your money.

But you will need your original tail housing or your mount will not bolt up.
Trust me on this.

It almsot fits like a glove...
I bought the transmission and started putting it in my 65 Catalina and really almost everything is a direct fit. I had to use the shift linkage lever from the 65 trans since the lever on the 74 trans is shaped differently, but that is more or less it. However, today I discovered one problem: The transmission mount that connects the tail housing to the crossmember has a different bolt pattern on the 74 trans compared the to the 65 trans. The distance between the 2 bolt holes on the tail housing is slightly larger (about maybe 10 mm) on the newer trans. So my new question: is there any transmission mount that I can buy that would fit the new transmission and my stock crossmember? Otehrwise I will either have to change the tail housing or somehow modify the existing trasnmission mount...

See my prior post. The Grandville has a "D" tailhousing and the mount bolt pattern is different.

Did you miss my post?

Use your original tail housing.

Yes, I somehow missed your earlier post... So, if there is no suitbale trans mount from another model, I will change the tailhousing.

After changing the the tailhousing as mentioned above, the trans fit perfectly and the car is running fine again now.
Thanks for all the helpful tips.
