installing 4L80E trans/ Homemade rear-upper adjustable control arms-floor pans/trunk
Been a while since I've posted regarding my 68 GTO. Thought I would share some progress that some may find interesting. I decided to go with a 4L80E transmission. One concern that some people brought to my attention was having to cut or dimple the trans tunnel to fit the fittings and transmission lines. A few people that reached out to me said that I wouldn't have to. They were right! Seems like we have room for the fittings and lines without cutting or dimpling the trans tunnel.
Here are a few pictures of what we've been doing to my car. What started out as a simple transmission swap and changing the factory gauges to Dakota Digital, turned into doing floor pans, trunk pans, new bushings for the rear/upper control arms, making the rear/upper control arms adjustable, rebuilding the rear end, Jeep conversion steering box and converting the hideaway headlights to electric. I've certainly been learning a lot lately working on the car. If anyone is interested in how to make the adjustable rear/upper control arms, I'll get that information from my buddy that did it. He's a forum member but does more reading than posting. |

Trunk brace - Trunk pan partially welded
We had a problem with the old air operated Dynabrade band-file. I purchased the electric Milwaukee band file and it overheated in a matter of minutes so I returned it. After consulting with a welder friend, he recommended the electric Dynabrade dynafile. It just got delivered today. We'll be putting that thing to the test this week!

Earls cooler and adjustable rear upper control arms
We had to reduce the 16 AN fittings on the Earls cooler down to a 6AN. Here are a few more pictures of the rear upper control arms.

Wow, several projects at the same time. That rearward cooling line worked out good. My spare 4L80 has that rear line. I put the cooler to the Pass floor board with 12 volt brushless fans. runs (super quiet) when key is on.

Yeah, we didn't expects all these projects but decided to address them as they were discovered. We also swapped out all exterior lights to LED's. We're also going to try to tuck in the rear bumper. Oh...I also have some trumpet exhaust tips to install. A few friends have said my exhaust looks like two trailer hitches or wheelie bars. No clue what they're talking about! Ha!!
We mocked up the trans cooler on the top side of the drivers side grill. We wanted to keep enough room for a condenser in case I ever install A/C. We also had to consider the bar that connects the electric hideaway headlights doors. We tested the headlight doors and the clearance is good. |

Well, when a friend of mine saw this cooler and the fittings he said this cooler must have been meant to cool an M1 Abrams tank.. Haha. Here is a link to the cooler.
