Did ALL 64 radios have the civil defense mark? Hmmmmm….

By law, radio sets manufactured between 1953 and 1963 had two frequencies marked by the triangle-in-circle ("CD Mark") symbol of Civil Defense. They were no longer required after 63 though a number of later radios still used them and in some cases the mark was simply a triangle.

Pic 1 is a 64 A-body radio (unknown build date) with the marks; pic 2 is a May Pontiac plant build also with the marks. My guess would be that if a radio in that late of a build had the defense marks they were used throughout the 64 year.

Maybe a forum member can provide an example of a 64 date coded radio without the CD marks.

Not sure if all '64 Pontiacs had the Civil Defense markings on the AM dial.

In fact, until I read it here, I did not know the history of the law though I remember noticing those little triangles on the radio face even as a young boy. I had no idea that they were dropped at some point. Perhaps because my first 2 cars were a '63 Fury and a '64 GTO, both well used when I took possession.

A quick search suggests that Pontiac, Chevrolet, and Oldsmobile continued to use the marks on the '64 radios, dropped them for the '65 radios.

Buick and Cadillac seem to have dropped the marks on their '64 radios but that begs the question, did they drop the marks at the beginning of the '64 Model Year or only after Jan 1, 1964?

If all year, was it because they were sold as '64 models even if built in '63?

Or was the law changed BEFORE year end '63?

It appears that all Delco radios in GM products did not have the marks for the '65 Model Year.

Of course a late built (as in July '64) could have gotten a '65 radio and an early built '65 (as in Aug/Sept '64) could have gotten a '64 radio.

I guess the related question would be, any '65 Pontiacs have the marks on their original radios?

Curious why Delco dropped the marks on '64 Cadillac and Buick radio dials but not on the others, at least according to my quick search.

Civil Defense Triangles on the ‘64 AM radio dial.

My files on Unrestored GTO’s show a late 7C (BF Built) ‘64 that still has the two triangles.

My early Unrestored ‘65 GTO 11A (BAL Built) does NOT have the Civil Defense Triangles.

Have never seen a '64 GTO without the CD triangles, and have never seen a '65 GTO with them.
