Default Fan shroud installation

When I got my car, it did not have a fan shroud, and someone decided to bend the brackets WAY out. Today I bent the brackets back, BUT as they are now, there is a gap between the shroud and the radiator. Is the shroud supposed to sit directly on the radiator or should there be this gap? Take a look at the pics.

What model and year is this car? I have a 1972 LeMans with a 350, automatic transmission, and air conditioning. This car has a slight gap on the sides that is built into the shroud.

Is that supposed to be a stock shroud or an aftermarket universal type?

It's a Tempest Custom cloned into a GTO. I have a 455 and an alum radiator that is a little thicker than the stock 3 core that used to be in there.

I got the shroud from a Pontiac company that is not our host (shhh) - its supposed to be a stock shroud that fits Pontiacs 64 - 67 or something. The gap is like a 1/4" to almost 1/2" from the shroud to the radiator. Without the brackets, I can see how it would directly fit against the rad in order to keep airflow smooth. I just want to make sure I need to bend the brackets in more to get it to the right place.

I would not worry about 1/4"- 1/2" gap before trying it to see how it works. If the temps go down a good amount with the shroud you're good; if the temps barely change or don't change at all, block off the edges where the gap is with tape (temporarily) and see if it makes a difference before making any permanent mods.

Agreed with 72, 1/4 gap won,t hurt a thing, My 67 GTO wraps around outside of radiator and sits flush but in a few spots i have a 1/8 gap.

I think he could use a pic of yours. His is evidently in the same year range but with an aftermarket radiator and stock shroud. The '72 is my car.

Installed everything today. Looks good! I haven't had her on the road, but I can feel a LOT more blowing through this fan. I tried my best to position it half in, half out.

and in addition to the shroud, there are the rubber baffles also used in ac cars. They go along way to facilitate blocking the gaps and increasing air flow through the radiator

Ah yes, when I talked to someone at PY, he mentioned them - said there was a kit with a bunch of blocking material, and said it wasn't necessary but could be my next step.
