This is my first post, so go easy....

1967 Bonneville with a 400, 4-barrel carb, vacuum-advance dizzy: replaced the points and set dwell successfully, but when I timed the engine using the marks (5 BTDC according to my '67 shop manual)it ran awful! I leaned out the carb as far as it would go and it simply would not idle.

Is 10 BTDC OK considering today's octane? It runs so much better, but I'm concerned about torching my valves. I do add a lead additive to my gas. Is there a particular idle speed I should set my timing at? Also, I looked at my plugs before setting the timing and noticed they were grey/white. Possibly running too lean or advanced?

Thanks!
