I am changing the timing chain anf gears on my 74
455. I am having a problem with the cam sprocket. The service manual says to make sure the cam goes through the sproket to locate the pump eccrentic. When I do this the cam sprocket bottoms out against the cam retaining plate. Isn't there supposed to be some clearence between the sprocket and the block.?

Are you saying the gear bottoms out after the cam sticks out of the gear? Or bottoms before the gear sticks out?

Also is the cam gear on the correct way?

The gear bottoms out after the end of the cam sticks out.
