Default CS-130 alternator

Does anyone use one of these style alternators on their pontiac? If so was there any mods needed for the alternator bracket etc? The CS-130 style alternator puts out 85 amps at idle where as the standard 100 amp 10s or 12s series alternators might put out up to 50. With dual electric fans, electric water pump, electric fuel pump, stereo, ignition and night driving this could be a plus. Should also charge faster on race days and the cooling design is better etc.

Can't answer your fitment questions, but watch out on the durability (or lack thereof) of CS130 alternators.

Prone to heat failures of the diodes, as well as undersized, weak bearings. If you DO decide to use one, try to find a rebuilder who makes the appropriate durability "updates" - oversized bearings, rear case with a heat sink and cooling fins, etc.

My next alternator will be the new MSD unit. I enclosed a link for you, has info and wiring kits for the CS-130. http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/cs-130.shtml

The way to go is with a CS-144 unit. The bearings are much better, the case looks more like a 10- or 12SI, and they're DURABLE. I've got 3 cars with them, and one has over 100K miles, another 75+ K miles, and over 10 years of age. One is my '66 GTO with EFI, electric fans, A/C, electric brake booster, 3 electric fuel pumps...

These came on all LT1 F-bodies and B-bodies, as well as most Northstar Cadillacs. They'll fit directly in place of the old 10SI units. They're rated at 120 or 140 amps, depending on original application.

I have this one. Looks great, performs great no issues so far. Haven't had it long. Only thing that I noticed was that I had to bump the idle up to 900 to keeo 14.4 with all my stuff on. Other than that works perfect. The seller was quick to get back to me, fast shipper and answered questions about the alt after I purchased it.

HTH,
Dave

Oh yeah, NO fitment issues.

Bought a Powermaster 130 for a late model firebird. Fit fine with the march serpentine setup.

LT1 F-bodies were built from '93-'97.

The problem with any CS series alternator is it will need a pulley change.

If your on the road it fails, your hosed.

The one that I got had a v-belt pulley on it. Did OEM's with CS130's have the issues as above? I haven't heard many complaints..

Yup, i can swap pulleys no problems. Just ordered a full system upgrade kit from MAD electrical, talked to the owner and he said the CS-130 does fairly well in cars but the 144 is much more robust. He was concerned about slippage with anything over 100A with a v-belt but said the pontiacs had ~180 degrees of belt/pulley contact which is about as good as it gets.

Is the shaft size the same as an OEM Pontiac alt or do you have buy an aftermarket V pulley for the CS?

Pretty sure its the same size. I can check when i receive the alternator, just waiting on some quotes.

EDIT: CS-144 Alternator is purchased and should be here in the next two days. I can take pics and measurements then.

I can confirm that the CS144 pulleys directly interchange with the old V-groove. An air gun makes this a 2 min job, just make absolutely sure you keep track of any shims or spacers used to not bind up the cooling fan. Make sure that you keep the far superior original CS144 cooling fan in place and don't use the old school blade-type fan on it, or else your expensive new alternator will live a very short life.

I've done the CS144 conversion on 3 old Pontiacs, an Olds and my Scout. Great upgrade, easy wiring, and you get to ditch the ugly arse external regulator box if your car has one. When wiring, put the voltage sensing wire at a central location and don't just loop it back to the charging wire terminal if possible, as I find this really helps with eliminating headlight flickering at idle. I run my V-sensing wire to my ford relay in each of my vehicles, where I also run a ton of other things from.

Regarding slippage of the V-belt, I've heard that is a concern too. Half of my rides I'm using double groove pulleys and double belts for the CS144, and the other half I'm using the single groove (for aesthetics) and have not had a perceivable problem with either arrangement.

Fwiw-

I already run a 12si and did the internal reg upgrade. Well worth the effort.

Anybody run the cs144 on a relocated mount down low?
