We completed a full weekend of drag racing by running at the Pontiac Uprising event at Arkansas City, Kansas on Oct 5, and then attending the Nostalgia races at the Wichita, Kansas track on Oct 6.
Pontiac Uprising, Arkansas City: There was a strong head wind most of the day, but otherwise the temperature was moderate and had normal pressure and humidity. Wind tended to die down later in the day and the car picked up. Lost the first round in Super Pro as we did not run the dial. We then entered the second chance, or Gambler's Race, with an entry of $15 per car (19 car field). And all entry money went back to the finalists in the race. First round, ran an 11.81 on an 11.80 dial for the win. Second round, ran 11.78 on an 11.80 dial for win after opponent's red light. Third round, ran 11.77 on an 11.75 dial for the win. Fourth round, ran 11.73 on a 11.75 dial for the win after opponent's red light. Before the fifth and final round, agreed with the opponent to split the money 50-50 in the finals, so we both could run full out and try to hit the number! And that turned out to be my best decision of the day! Fifth round, dialed 11.72 and ran 11.7178 at 113.75! Opponent ran 11.8744 on an 11.87 dial! With a slightly better reaction time, we lost by running .0022 seconds too quick! In summary, averaged 11.76 for five runs over a span of 2 1/2 hours. As a result, we split the $285 purse for $142 each finalist. My car is a '71 Pontiac LeMans four door wagon with a 10.07 cr 473 ci engine, T-400, Continental "tight" 10" converter with a flash stall of 3200, and 3.31 rear gears. It is equipped with MT ET DOT tires and full-out-the-rear quiet exhaust system with a Dr. Gas X Crossover. It is a fully licensed and equipped street car with no electronics, no trans brake, and not even a line lock - we run with the foot brake and throttle. This past weekend, we were running a modified "STOCK" cast iron Q jet intake, a Mellings original 041 grind Pontiac hydraulic cam of 230 intake and 240 exhaust, an 800 Q jet, shifting at 5500, and running 92 octane Amoco pump gas with no additives or boosters. The car and same driver was weighed on NHRA scales at an NHRA event at Kansas City four weeks ago and the as-raced weight after the second run was 4040# with 3/8th full tank. In summary, averaged 11.76 for five runs over a span of 2 1/2 hours. Wichita International Raceway: Went to the Wichita track Sunday, and had even stronger head wind. It averaged 18 mph and gusted much higher. Lost first round with a breakout of 11.85 on an 11.89 dial. (missed a significant change in barometric pressure in the two hours between time trials and eliminations). And the winner had a .501 reaction time and broke out by .03 on the brakes! Bought back and won second round with a 11.836 on an 11.83 dial. Lost next round with an 11.830 on an 11.83 dial, and a 540 reaction time! Opponent has an .515 reaction time and ran 10.868 on a 10.86 dial - in other words, he flat spanked us! I have always stressed the importance of repeatability for successful racing, and here are some examples - will list the 60' times for the five elimination rounds at Ark City, and all five rounds at Wichita: Ark City: 1.6502 1.6391 1.6444 1.6346 1.6476 That is a total spread of .0156 seconds over a period of 2.5 hours. Wichita First time trial - 1.660 2nd time trial - 1.668 1st elimination - 1.663 2nd elimination - 1.661 3rd elimination - 1.662 Only a .008 second spread in the 60' times over a period of five hours! That is some excellent driving by Kevin Kirk who drove my car both days in the actual racing. It was a fun weekend, we met lots of Pontiac folks, ran well, and broke nothing - can't ask for much more when drag racing! Jim Hand |

Great Jim, keep it up and post more technical comparisons when you get a chance.
Maybe you could summarize quickly what you have found when comparing : Intakes Cams Rear Gears Carbs Carb spacers block off/ no block off plates headers X-pipe Mufflers Converters Shift points How the food was at each track, bathroom cleanliness, etc. Just kidding on last 2 http://www.kingofgtos.com/index.htm

Great report Jim. I like the info and "All" the times with 60 ft'ers, etc.
It might bore some people but gives a lot of people a better idea of which way to go or approach things. Lay it out and let people copy. It's the greatest form of flattery. Very impressive for a "Tank". Ya going to be at any Major Events next year? Or are ya gonna let Floyd do all the talking. LOL.
