I guess I always thought these intakes were pretty much the same thing. I was talking to a Pontiac guy today and he told me that they are way different. I have the 69' RAIV and was going to put it on a warmed up 76' 455. He thought that the 71' H.O. would be a better choice. I have no reason to disbelieve him, but now I'm curious as to what the differences actually are. What are they worth? If the H.O. intake is indeed a better choice he has one he would swap. It really doesn't make any difference to me as long as I get the right one and for a fair trade.

The only real difference is (other than casting #s) the RAIV is 'precision cast' and the HO is a regular sand casting. There is NO difference whatsoever in flow or runner design between the two. The RAIV is more valuable than the HO, looks like you are about to be taken for a ride. [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif[/img]
Performance-wise neither one of those rare aluminum intakes flows or performs quite as well as a plain-ol' cast iron Q-jet intake made from '67-72 believe it or not. Tested a '69 iron intake, performed a hair better than my '71 HO that was port-matched to my '71 HO heads (x-over removed and blocked off). The '69 intake was run with NO mods, even the exhaust x-over was functional! [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif[/img] The RAIV and HO intakes are great if you are restoring a car that needs one, but spending money on one for extra performance is a waste! Hmm... Kinda what I was thinking. Not a big deal, I haven't done any trading yet. I do like these intakes though. Cool look and the weight savings is a good thing. Thanks again b-man!

O.K. here is what I have been thinking. He told me that the RAIV is worth more than his H.O. He seemed to be honest about this fact. He also said that he would deduct the difference from a set of heads I might have him do. My idea is if these are pretty much the same thing, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to swap and get the heads done cheaper. I don't know... Wadya think about just keeping my RAIV and going with an Edelbrock Performer RPM and eliminating any doubt about the deal?

Buy the RPM, keep the RAIV for a 'spare'. Do the head work deal with cash if you do any deal at all. I don't know who you are dealing with, but if he thinks those two intakes are 'way different' [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img] I would hesitate to have any real performance Pontiac head work done by him.
I would recommend Dave at SD Performance for head work. Honest guy who does top-quality work for a very reasonable price, well worth the extra cost of shipping. Man, I'm thinking more and more about saving my $$ and using an old early 70's cast iron intake...

Maybe my 72 HO replacement intake is a freak but on the flow bench it flows 5% better than any cast iron. Also without the crossover it weighs about 1/2!!22lbs vs 46lbs.
The RPM is an even better intake and will do better on a modified motor.

yea, I had a precision-cast (real sweet Wheatstone) 72 HO intake. Sold it with the mint iron crossover&shield for $400.

This guy (I hesitate to use his name) has a good reputation on this board as far as I can tell and I don't want to badmouth him. I am going to his shop on Saturday to talk with him, if I have a good feeling about him I'll leave the heads, if not I'll take 'em home. He says the right things and want's to know all about the car so he can get the right set-up, but he has a bit of an attitude (seems like, just talking on the phone).
