Time for a new Cam, I want more power.
SHould I go with a

400 H.O. Cam?
R.A. III?
R.A. IV??

SHould I stick with the stock 92 Heads or go bigger? Maybe 6X or 16s??

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

Joe, I will assume your car has a 389 and a stock cam since you have not given any info. I would say stay away from any cam larger than the factory 068 cam (212/225@.050,.407"lift,used in the 400 HO, and many other engines too) or something with equivalent duration. I would even suggest the Summit 2800 or Edelbrock Performer cam, both have identical specs (204/214@.050,.420/.443"lift). Too much cam in a heavy car will kill performance. Sometimes less is more, and when choosing cams a slightly smaller cam will out-perform one that is too big every time. Both cams mentioned can be run with all the stock valvetrain pieces.

I ran the Perormer cam in a low-compression 400 (8.2:1, had 6X-4 350 heads with no milling and std. bore) installed in a fully-equipped 4100# '69 GP with TH400 and 3.23 gears. Without headers and running a stock induction it ran in the mid-15s at 2800 ft. leaving soft so it wouldn't burn up the tire with the open rear. I have no doubt it would have dipped into the high 14s at sea-level. It ran on 87 octane. That would be the reason to install some 6X-4 heads (milled a bit) on your 389, to make it more pump-gas friendly. It may perform a bit better with the better ports and bigger intake valve, but I wouldn't expect a huge difference compared to your current heads. Good luck. I think its gonna be the 400 HO. My main problem is, if I go to big I am going to need headers, and they don't make headers for a big car with a column shifter.

The Hand's performance data suggest the RAM IV cam.

SO, you decide where you are, and where you're headed.

Glad to have made this decision clear for ya!

The 068 HO cam would be a wise choice, you can just torque down the adjusting nuts to 20# and go. Any bigger and your engine won't haul the freight very well, the RAIV is waaaay too much cam for a 389-powered heavy car with street gears. Maybe a set of 4.11 or 4.33 gears would make the RAIV cam useable in your car, but it would suck (fuel too) to take on long highway trips with those short gears. Hey Joe,

Your Bonnie is a nice cruiser and I am sure you enjoy driving it. A big cam will slow you down, and you will no longer enjoy driving. Plus your mileage will go in the toilet. I suggest the 068 cam with 1.65 rocker arms, milled 6X heads to get 9.0 compression, 67 GTO RA style exhaust manifolds or the long branch manifolds if they will fit your car. Have a custom 2-1/2 pipe exhaust system made with some quiet free flowing mufflers like Walker Dynomax Super Turbos or the four chamber Flow masters. All of these things will increase torque and HP but won't hurt low RPM performance or driveability. Just my opinnion.

1/2" Stud

Jim Hand is a master at porting heads to get low lift air flow, maybe the best. He doesn't need a roller cam, as soon as the valve starts to open his heads are breathing like 16 year old loosing his virginity. Jim's test bed cars have high stall converters, ported heads, headers etc. A RA IV cam might wake up Joes Bonnie if he had ported heads, Rhodes lifters, high stall converter, headers and a good exhaust system. That's not my idea of a cool lookin smooth ridin Bonniville. Just my opinnion

you said "...his heads are breathing like 16 year old loosing his virginity."

Well I was porting heads at 16 and certainly dont't remember feeling that!
