Anyone know what a good manufacturer of screw-in head bolt kits is and where to buy their products from? I want to install on my 66/389.
Thanx in advance! Michael |

What heads do you have? If you do not have screw on studs already you will have to take your heads to a mach. shop and have them tap the heads. If you do have screw in studs buy a set from summit. Get them for a BBC. They will work fine.
My Rig's a little old, but that don't mean she's slow.

66 092 heads. I will have to have them threaded. Is there a difference in the ones used if they already accept threaded studs??
Thanx!! Michael Michael... http://www.whatisdat.com/gto/66_front.jpg |

All the studs have a 1/2"-13 base. You can use factory 3/8" bottle neck studs or 7/16" aftermarket. What do you want to do? If you are looking to have an adjustable valve train you will also need to use "KoolNuts" to hold down your rockers.

One other machining operation besides just tapping the holes left by the old studs must be done to the 389 heads before you can use screw-in studs with a hex on the bottom. You need to mill the stud bosses down to the correct height, later press-in stud heads ('67 and later) that came from the factory with pushrod guideplates don't need this machine work.
Your heads can be tapped for 1/2-13 threads and the appropriate ARP studs made for this application can be used. Or you can tap for and install 7/16-14 Heli-coil inserts and use regular Pontiac bottleneck studs or big block Chevy studs (best). All the Pontiac and big block Chevy studs are 7/16-14 on the bottom, only the special ARP studs have 1/2-13 bottom threads that don't require a threaded insert. What cam do you plan to use? If you choose a factory performance cam like the 'tried and true' 068 389 Tripower cam (also used in the 400 HO and 455 HO along with many other engines) you can just leave the press-in studs there if you like. If you plan just a stock rebuild with a better cam you might save the substantial extra cost of converting to screw-in studs. Stizzed,
Are you looking for screw in rocker arm studs or head bolt studs? The replys are for rocker arm studs, but your post asked for a screw in head bolt kit.
