Default WANTED: NE Illinois OHC6 mechanic

Hello all & Happy Easter,

I'm looking for a mechanic shop within 40 miles of Chicago who has experience with the OHC6 in my 1967 Tempest Sprint... I'd sure like to see this return to the road while I'm still breathing & my heart's still pumping. What do I need done? Rebuilt water pump installed. Rebuilt "accessory box" (oil pump box) bolted-on. Distributor installed, new points, timed correctly. New radiator installed. New front grills (from Ames) installed. Nice front bumper installed. I have all these parts. Got screwed when someone took my $$ a few years ago, disassembled it then split. Been heartbroken since. I have minor physical handicap and could do alot but I don't want to chance it nor so I want to be screwed again. Called around & more than one suggested I take the OHC6 out and install a V8 but I'd rather keep it as close to original as possible. I just can't find the talent to do it. Peace to all & thanks for the suggestions.

Since you have a lot of parts installed, what is the current state of the engine? Where are you located?

George

George, are you the same that sold me a torque honing plate for OHC-6, 3 or 4 lifetimes ago?
The way I read he needs those parts installed.

Roy,
I might suggest two things to assist you in locating a knowledgeable shop/tech.
Reaching out to any/all local car clubs both Pontiac and otherwise.
In most cases, this can lead to someone who has an established reputation in the area.

Another would be checking in on the OHC 6 FB forum,
there you will get exposure to many OHC 6 owners who may be able to guide you as well.

IMHO what you have listed doesn't necessarily require an "OHC-specific" technician just someone familiar with classic cars.

Cheers.

Also buy a shop manual(GM service manual).
Its cheap reference.

Cammer-6: nope, that wasn’t me, but I did a fair amount of wrenching on my previous 67 Lemans Sprint back in the day. Really enjoyed driving the car….230 sprint, 3:90 posi, 5 speed, fully optioned, no A/C tho..

George

It's a roller at this point. The engine itself is still under the hood & the car's been in storage for a few years.
  • The accessory box (oil pump, distributor, fuel pump) was removed. I believe it's made from cast alum. Previous owner cranked the oil sending unit on too tight, resulting in a tiny crack in the cast alum causing an oil spray when +1800rpms. I subsequently had a new accessory box rebuild out of mine & a donor box.
  • The previous owner also must've either installed the dipstick tube incorrectly ( top-down instead of pan-up), because the tip of the dipstick (which I believe is the correct 13"-ish length) doesn't touch oil even with plenty of oil in the engine.
  • Radiator was in poor condition. Got a super-good deal on a new polished alum radiator, so that needs installation + new hoses.
  • AFAIK, the Qjet carb is good as is the fuel pump.
  • Just to be on the safe-side, I purchased a rebuilt H2O pump as I've never owned a car pre-1990 that didn't have need to have it replaced & was installing a new radiator/hoses, anyway.
  • Drain the fuel tank & get a 2nd mortgage on my house to refill it.
  • Inspect/replace fuel lines & hoses (the metal fuel lines are probably good).
  • Brake inspection (manual drums all corners). Would consider front disc upgrade but, if she don't move, she has no need to slow down. So that's down the road.
  • Obvious tune-up with new plugs & points in the distributor or willing to upgrade to electronic. There's even a magneto for sale on eb*y that, in concept, fascinates me but I don't know enough about that technology to believe it'd be better.
  • New front grills installed & decent bumper bolted back on. Trim pieces in my garage to be reattached.

Joliet, Illinois (40 miles SE of Chicago). I'd really get this done by someone with brains & integrity.
