Default 8 track question

Does the 8 track player mount to the console or the bottom of the dash? Other than the heater duct does anything else need to be changed to install one? I was talking to a guy at our local cruise in today and he said he had one but didn't have any use for it. I told him I might be interested in it but we both got side tracked before money could be discussed. What would a working unit be worth?

They mount to the dash, you'll need all the wiring harnesses and the back bracket that holds the 8 track. Worth much less than they used to be as the faceplate, the difference between "A" and "B" units, is now repopped. The unit itself is readily available.

X2 on making sure you get the wire harness that goes with it as the wire harness can be bought from other s & from ebay but the avg. price on the wire harness is over $ 100.00 + so it's not worth as much as it would be if you don't get the harness with it.

Thanks for the replies. I get the feeling that this one may be a freebie. If it is I may install it just for looks.

I think there's a plastic strip that goes along the top of the 8 track mounting bracket to the dash as well.

Exclamation 8-TRACK MOUNTING

This may help, from the '67 SM note the arrows for brackets
and a side note of the one part usually missing the air duct/deflector used with 8-Tracks.

Thanks Jeff. What I can’t figure out is where the top of the bracket on the rear of the 8 track hooks up under dash. It looks like my a/c duct going is in the way.

I have a couple pics left from my 67, it had AC and 8 track, they may help. You can see in the 1 pic the bracket hanging down. I want to say there was a small post on the back of the unit that went thru the bracket, and a nut tightened it, but I don't have a pic of it.

That part I know. Where the top of that bracket is connected to I can’t figure. One thread said to the back of the radio but mine (am/fm doesn’t have a spot as far as I can see and it wouldn’t line up correctly if it did.

If you get one Phil, the tapes are out there. I have a radio in my garage that has the 8 track player in it. Last summer I found a guy that has all kinds of tapes for sale. I grabbed 2 for 5 bucks each. Now I can play Led Zeppelin and ELO any time I want. Just find a flea market somewhere and you should be able find the tapes. Play them before you buy them to make sure they're ok.

IIRC that is correct. It goes in behind the main duct and attaches to the case.
Unfortunately the main duct has to be dropped to do so.
I think this case shows were a bracket would be attached likely with a self tapping screw.

The 8 track tapes are in a loop. Although the tapes become brittle over the years generally the tape joint completing the loop is what goes bad first. Guess the adhesive on the tape gives out. The tape can be carefully rotated until the tape joint is visible in opening and then reinforced with scotch tape before using. Also if the tape motor runs but does not play the rubber drive belt is usually broken. I have seen replacements available on eBay. The belt can be check by removing the top cover. If you don't have an original rear strap one can be easily made. If you make the strap shorter but long enough to reach the metal heater case you may be able to attach with a self tapping screw without removing the main plastic duct. The unit is heavy and if not supported in the rear the cast mounting ears that attach to the dash break easily when you hit a bump.

That's a good pic of the hard to find AC & 8 track only courtesy light too, the teardrop style on the passenger side. The retaining screw looks a little different on mine though. The diagram in this thread Jeff posted also shows the rubber strip that runs across the top of the 8 track bracket I referred to 2 years ago.

New question on this old thread - the installation/wiring diagram shows two screws are used to mount the player to the dash. On my dash, the passenger side has a threaded hole but the drivers side is just a 7/16" hole. Is there something missing or do I just need to use a bolt/nut to mount?

Thank you.

Hutch,

This pic shows the 2 screws that mounted to the dash. There is also a bracket in the back of the unit.

I used the correct 9423284 screw on both sides to mount the 8-track into the existing holes. I omitted the 103320 lock washer so I would not scratch the mounting flanges

FYI, If your car had AC, the driver's side hole is covered by the duct bracket 9787826. 8 track equipped cars use a different bracket 9788984.
