67 gearshift knob
Does anyone know if the plastic column gearshift knob introduced in 67 was used up into the 70s? They look exactly the same on all Pontiac cars way past 67.

No, according to my July 1972 MPC the '67 was one year only and color keyed to the interior. Black shows to be part #3899067. Beginning in '68 the number changed to 9792623 (black only) and used through 1973.

interesting. My 67 Lemans was completely original aqua interior and I had a black shift knob on the column. No proof it wasn't changed since I'm not original owner but I highly doubt it. Can't say I've ever seen one that wasn't black in all my travels in life but who knows. Also, doesn't make sense to be color keyed to interior without the turn signal knob to match and I've never seen one of those that wasn't black either. Parts books have been shown to be wrong in the past from info I've gleaned off PY here.

That is interesting, I also have never seen another one any color but black but that doesn’t mean much lol. I wonder if the shape really changed after 67, this is going to be tough finding a one year only part!

I just looked again to clarify and this is referring to the (M-40) trans section only.
The color keyed column shift knobs are actually listed for Firebird F/8 only. All '68 to '73 models with column shift used the 9792623 knob as noted before. I do not see a knob only listed for '67 column shift other than Firebird. It appears that the knob is part of the "lever" and is noted as (dull black) for '67 Tempest/GTO-T/8 and Big Car-P/8. The P/8 lever shows two lever numbers, with or without tilt. |
