How to Set Miles on New Speedometer
I bought a new OER 160mph speedometer for my '77 Trans Am. How do I set the initial miles? No instructions for that were included in the box.
And spare me the whole "legality" of it, please. This car is already registered with TMU, but I'd like to keep tracking its current actual miles on the odometer. |

There is no easy taking them apart & setting the odometer to a certain mileage. Am not acquainted with the repro speedo heads. Many many years ago, I played around with several 160 bird speedos, running them forward to 00000.

I mean, I could pretty easily hook up a drill to it and spin it up, but I guess I assumed there's an easy method to set initial mileage without having the numbers lose their alignment

That's not really feasible, though. My fastest drill only drives the speedometer to 115mph. Even if I went backwards from zero, it would still take me 208 hours to get to 76k. There's nothing sane about that.

Old school used car lots were experts at this. Picking odometers has become a lost art.

Here ya go, step by step instructions:

Turned out not to be too hard. The odometer comes right out by removing one clip (which I immediately lost, but I had spares). Numbers turn easily once it's out. I didn't even have to pry it, just turn the numbers sequentially until I got to my desired 77,723 miles. Putting it back in is a fiddly affair, getting all the little tabs to line up with the bar so the numbers look straight. Finally got it done and now it looks and functions great.

Hope you used rubber gloves and did not leave your fingerprints on it, LOL.

I did not, and there were fingerprints all over the surface but I have a mild degreaser I was able to use to get rid of them without damaging that unbelievably delicate painted surface

Seriously, I am glad you found a way to set it. That way you can say honestly that the mileage is correct. I have seen some cars with a sticky that says something to the effect 'add so and so miles to make the odometer correct'.
