How do you guys keep your rear package tray in place ('71 GTO)?
Mine will not stay in place. I am constantly shoving it back in place after a drive. It just works its way forward every time. I have the factory jute insulation under it. Did you spray yours with trim adhesive before installing? If so, this will be a bit more difficult on mine as I'm not sure I will be able to fold mine forward to spray it.
I thought of just using trim adhesive and applying into the groove that locates the back edge of the tray, but that would create a problem if I ever had to replace the package tray again. Any suggestions?

Sliding forward? And it's under the lip of the back glass trim lip? On mine, there's no way for it to move forward, the seat back extends just over the lip, there's nowhere for it to go.
And you folded the vinyl lip over the edge and glued it down? .

Make sure your seat back is fully engaged on the hooks up top. There should be no gap.

I'm with Highway, and having a hard time understanding how a package tray can slide forward.
Bunch of different cars here and they all pretty much install the same way, with a very snug fit under the back glass and on both sides of the rear valance panels. Then the front vinyl lip folds down under the top of the back seat. And that is generally fastened a couple different ways. Glue is the most common, some are stapled. Once the upper portion of the rear seat is installed, that package tray isn't going anywhere. |

If you wanted to, you could slide it out and fold it over the back seat. It is pliable and compresses allowing the tray to slide forward and out of channel below the back glass. I slide it back in place by pushing against the package tray edge (which you can feel through the bead). A couple days and drives later, it's out again. It's almost as if the package tray (plastic mesh) has shrunk from sun exposure. The package tray can't be glued down with trim/contact adhesive) because it has to be slid back into the channel below the back glass though Silicone or Quickgrab might work. In pic#3, you can see that I can press in against the package tray edge through the flashing:

Yeah, the rear seatback/upright isn't on the top hooks right, or the rear seatback/upright frame top would be touching the front edge of the package tray. I'm pretty sure that's your issue, the rear seatback/upright frame is not hooked onto those hooks.
Sometimes the cardboard of the divider prevents, or makes it tougher, to hook the seatback to the hooks, especially if you have the jute on there. I usually cut 'squares' into the divider, where the perforation is for the tabs that hold it in place, hook the divider on the tabs, push down to seat it, and tap the tabs onto the divider to hold it better in place, and prevent any issues with getting the seatback/upright onto the hooks. Pop the seatback out and look at it, there will be witness marks wherever the seat frame is preventing the seatback from going far enough back to hook. I usually with the palms of my hands, smack the seatback at a 45 degree angle, back & down, to get them on the hooks. .

For me it might be worth buying a new one and putting some silicone or trim adhesive under it during installation. If it bothers you every drive it’s probably worth it. I haven’t priced one in a while but they used to be fairly reasonable.

They were cheap ... $120 now. I think I paid about $35 when I bought this one.

Dayum! I remember when they were $15 LOL Nothing but cardboard with a piece of vinyl attached to it.
I do like some of the nicer ones they have now with perforations over the speaker cutouts, so you can hide speakers under it without a grill on top. |

I did find a mesh one like I have for $77.50 incl shipping but I still won't pay that much for it. That was the cheapest. Some sellers were as high as $150 incl shipping.
I have some spare windlace trim I am going to run around the edge and just glue it down with contact adhesive.

It will be a non-issue once you hook the seatback properly in the hooks. No way should you be able to get a finger in between the seatback frame and the rear package tray metal.
Take the seatback out and post a couple pics of the divider, the package tray metal, and the back of the seatback frame. You only need to pop the seat bottoms and take 2 screws out to get the seatback out. .

I replaced the package tray on my 70 gto. Once you fold the ends up and they get tucked underneath the sail panels I would think that alone would lock it in. Maybe a 71 is different? Thats all I did to mine and obviouslly I glued the vinyl strip down where the back top of the seat is. I did read about some people were cutting the wings off and sliding it in becasue they didnt want to mess with their sail panels. The tray I ordered from legendary didnt have the perforations right and when I bent up the ends and tried to install it it wasnt correct. Other people had the same problem. I ended up sending them my original and they got it perfect the second time. I hope they used that to correct their templates for future trays to customers.

You can climb in thru the trunk, stick your finger thru the hole the seatback retaining hooks go thru the divider, and FEEL if the seatback frame is on the hooks.
The top rail/wire of the seatback frame TOUCHES the metal portion of the package tray frame. If there's ANY gap there, the seatback is NOT hooked to the frame. If you can pull the top of the seatback away from the package tray, it's not hooked. You kind of have to have the seatback at an angle to hook the top properly, and may have to smack it with the palm of your hand back & down. The package tray has no where to go if installed properly. .
