Default What was the original finish on these hinges

I glass beaded my hood hinges that had a light coat of dirt build up from 40 years and some light rust. The cleaned up very easy, really surprised me, they came out as seen below. Were these natural metal originally?? Doesn't appear Cad plated, doesn't appear to be black oxide, doesn't appear to have been painted.

I know the topic has been discussed a lot, but most say their hinges had some kind of oxide coating, these appear to have had nothing ... but I sure would have expected more rust. They cleaned up as fast as you move the blaster.

They also seem to have almost no slop in them, although tough to tell until they are in use.

So ... just clear them with some satin? Oil them only (car will probably never see rain)?

Oiled Gray Phosphate coated, makes it appear near black.

Smile OPTION C

My OE hinges were/are in excellent condition and I really didn't see a need to send them out for a rebuild.
After looking at many different options I decided to try the VHT Flameproof High-Temp Cast-iron spray I had used on some other parts with great results.
So after an afternoon in the sandbox for a thorough cleaning, I went for it.
I think they came out great and look close to many I've viewed prior.

This was done years ago and I just took this picture so you can see how well it has held up.
Disregard the white film from the lithium grease I recently used

I'm liking the "cast iron" look .. went through my unmolested car photos and I'm seeing mostly a gray/natural/cast look. Remembering my GTO when I got it 46 years ago .. they definitely were not BLACK at the point I got the car, at least not a black you could clean up and they would look black. They were a medium gray, probably a phosphate coating that had grayed up after years of exposure.

As easy as these blasted, and considering the lack of rust I'm thinking what I'm seeing is mostly the original phosphate coating with natural metal showing through due to blasting. Only places there was some rust was the springs (which usually can't be phosphated because it compromises the metallurgy of the spring), and areas that were abraded by something which would have worn through the oxide coating.

They are too big for my manganese phosphating setup, so I think they are going to end up sprayed a cast iron'ish gray, or just oiled up and left as is.

I dusted mine with some Eastwood Black Phosphate paint when I was cleaning things up recently. It looks like cast iron in this pic, but it's darker with some metallic flecks in it. These are reproductions from Ames. The paint matched pretty well to whatever coating they shipped with.
