You should go out there and see if you can still make out the burnt rubber prints in the asphalt!

Brew, That first photo with Mikal and the T/A looks to have a pretty clear shot of the fender vent and the black grill. I know I have some of his emails tucked away. I'll see if I can find any of his tuning tips and post those at some point.

SD73,
i might be able to help you out on the plate frame.
BTW, Mazzei was a casualty of the economic down-turn and closed up late last spring...

Oh wow, that sucks! I just went to their old website and it redirects to some GM site. I appreciate the offer on the plate frame! That would be a cool find!

Mazzei built a big brand new facility a couple of years ago ('04?).. bit off too much overhead and crashed. I might have a Mazzei frame laying around?? I'll have to do some digging..

That area does look familiar.. I think that picture was taken out on the Pittsburg-Antioch highway... It might be out Port Chicago Highway though.... or Willow Pass... so much has changed around there in the last 15 years. I moved out of that area(Oakley) about 4 years ago

Sorry, no luck in digging any thing different for '72. That one I did post looks to me like it possibly could have been an updated version of the '72 spec sheet. The dates on that sheet range from 12-2-71 through 6-26-72.

If anyone has one of the conversion kits Norwood is talking about, or even a picture of the kit from a supplier manual it would be great to compare these details to the kit.
The kit was dead nuts and is still listed in most of the suppliers catalogs, but it has not been avalible for a long time...but it had NO stamping on the solinoid brkt. So I'm saying yours is original. Some of the service replacment shakers had the mounting ears spot welded on, are there any signs that they may have been removed?

Just bumping this thread to show a pic of my latest acquisition and give a huge thanks to bossbirdta for making it happen. Bossbirdta hooked my up with this amazing license plate frame from my original dealer. Thanks a lot!!! One of these days I'll post some more pics of when I first received the car in 2001 and contrast it with some recent pics of her back from the paint shop.

Thanky, Brewster! I just put the plate on for show. It sits in my pool table room. I was too cheap to pay for a vanity plate that no one would recognize and I do like the way the California white plates look on the car.

Here's my 73 sd formula a little over ten years from new in the hands of what i believe to be the second owner. I'm not sure, but think the first pic is pretty much how it was when he got it--cragars and chin spoiler and wheel flares already on the car. He worked at a NJ VW dealer and it came in for a trade--he bought it on the spot from the owner. notice the white painted bumper--yum. He had it painted to original cameo--i have the receipts, wasn't happy with it and did it again himself. second image is what he turned it into and how it was when i got it, except it had rusted out over some very bad bodywork by '98. I have another shot of it with his wife by it that i cant' locate and a couple polaroids of it stripped down that are also "safely stored" with the other pic. Hate it when i put things in safekeeping ...

You already have me searching for the correct plate frames.

1)Cobb-Kirkland Motor Co., Inc. in Montgomery Alabama and four speed from

2)Schwab Motor Sales in Warsaw, New York

I know LOL,
Brew

SD73,
glad you like the frame. it now looks right at home on your car, and the old blue plate looks very period correct.

Thanks to you! Yeah, that blue plate is growing on me too. Dammit, I just checked and another SD owner in California took up the name. Oh well, now at least I have an excuse for not paying for them.

Mikal was if anything, a man of patience. I don't think my heart could have endured the wait between responses.
