The purpose is as 71HOT/A said.

The same reason they put that metal 'spring' thing on the cowl for the Formula hood.

Like I always say: "I'm not a failure, I am just an excellent bad example."

I guess I am glad afterall, to have started all this insanity with my shake-enstein resto.

;-)

Shake-enstein....like it..

Didn't mean to devalue anyone's cars or parts here...But I will probably get another air cleaner form the parts bin and weld tabs on it to hold the SR shaker on the car. that was a great suggestion. Orig air cleaner and shaker will go to storage. I"ll fab up a GP air cleaner to do the trick.

And if a chance to fix the SR comes up, I'll change them to Shake-enstiens!

a GP air cleaner will sit too high on the carb, you'll need to start with a Formula air cleaner with the deep, drop base. If you use the GP one, your hood won't close. Just FYI

GP air cleaner won't work.......needs to be from a W66.(if you want to close the hood)

Ok now I'm confused? W66 is a Formula (that part I know). So you meant non RA? So if that is the case isn't a dual pre heat needed for TA? So then a modified W66 air cleaner with tabs added and another heat riser needed for a 71-72?

Just trying to learn here....

Default 1970 brochure shaker

I mentioned this earlier...has anyone seen the curved front,no drain shaker?...had to be the prototype...and I will have mine, shaker, not stirred...oh, and think of how much they saved when 72 used the accelerator kick down switch...and in 73 even more when they deleted it...I don't buy the engine drive by noise...thoughts?

OK so who has a relatively junky formula air cleaner? Just needs to work since the orig stuff goes on the shelf.

any other applications, like chev Camaro or whatever?

then again maybe I can make one by adding the deep drop to another air cleaner. Can't be more complicated than hanging quarters on a GP...

Unfortunately, no other applications, the snorkels are positioned differently than a '69 GTO or '70-72 GTO/455 GP dual snorkel aircleaners. Have repaired & restored a bunch of factory dual snorkels.

Depends on what ones building/restoring, they fit, but many differences in details of the repro drop base aircleaner.
