Default PF 24 vs PF 30

Just wonder what the differences is and why /when did they change over.
My owners manual says PF 24 (1971) but when you read on the -73 or so PF 24 it does state that they are for pontiac inline 6 not V8.

The PF24 is/was a Buick / Pontiac oil filter that has/had an anti-drainback valve. Buick engines have their filters mounted at an angle which require a more robust anti-drainback feature. As I recall the PF24 was discontinued after GM engineers determined that the PF30 was OK for Buick applications.

Word to the wise: as far as I'm aware, the current AC-Delco oil filters are made by Champion Labs and are apparently NOT of the highest quality any more. For what it's worth, I use Wix filters exclusively on my Formula and my DD Sierra. To each his own! Below is a link to some good discussions and pertinent discussion concerning oil filter design.

I also recommend the WIX filters over other brands.

Mike! Problems right now here to find PF24 filters. So my local speed-shop recommended Purolator. The filter felt and looked SMALLER than before and it has been confirmed,it is smaller.WIX filters only in USA? Safe to mount the Purolator filter, enough capacity? Aaaaaah, this is so confusing!!

Purolater is a decent filter, probably right up there in performance and quality with Wix, Hastings and Baldwin.

If you have the vertical clearance (i.e. no headers), I prefer to spec the taller "1 quart" filter vs. the shorter "1/2 quart" filter.

Here are the part numbers in various brands for the "1 quart" traditional Pontiac spin-on filter . . .

Wix: 51049
NAPA Gold: 1049 (I wonder who makes the NAPA filters?)
Hastings: LF212
Purolater: L30005
Baldwin: B9

Hope this helps . . .

Thanks for info! Don`t think I have the space for the longer filter.I have factory manifolds but it is tight with the exhaust system.Took a look at "RockAuto" and they had several options,WIX was one of them.

I don`t want smaller oilfilter, don`t trust and will not gamble with my original motor.
Well,have to decide soon.WIX or PF24..

I've NEVER seen a factory manifolds Pontiac that the 1-quart filter wouldn't fit . . .

If you're truly concerned about clearance, source the Wix 51258 "1/2-quart" filter then. Stay away from modern AC-Delco filters, FAR away IMO.

Assuming you are refering to the "longer" filter? No way there is a chance for clearance, too tight.Std filter yes, longer no.

Have used Purolator filter before with no problem but now they have downsized it.Looks like a filter for a 4-cyl car! So again, safe to use it?

That's odd, VERY odd.

I've owned about 30 late 60s to early 70s Pontiacs, and NEVER have I owned one (without headers) that the longer filter wouldn't fit. Yours must have one screwy exhaust system on it . . .

The 51258 Wix IS the shorter ("1/2 quart") filter. This length filter was factory installed on every Pontiac V8 from about 1967 or 1968 up, except the 265 and 301 cars.

You are probably right,it`s the same exhaust system since 1997 when I bought the car.
Well,no WIX filters in Sweden and the shipping charge from USA to Sweden is high.So it`s gonna be K&N,PF24;Fram or Purolator for this time. The driving season is short here and oil plus filter are replaced every spring.

Hmmm... I really like the Wix filter since it is all ready white, just give it a fast overspray to get rid of the Wix and add a PF 24 sticker and I am done, it will be great
