Default 70 tilt collumn jacked up part

Am I the only one thats haveing a problem with this nylon cam? I ahve taken my wheel apart to fix way too many times. First few times thought I had it fixed then relized unless I was gentle when I turned the key it would rotate too far and skip a tooth then I was screwed! Thought I would steal the part out of an old standard collumn, WRONG, they are not the same. Finally stole one out of a junky old tilt collumn I had and was fine for a while then, jacked up again.
Can you buy these cams and do they make a better or improved part. If you look at the last tooth on the cam you can see its damaged. Was not when I installed.

that large spring has a hook on the top end that looks like you have it in the right place, but the other loop that has a 90 degree bend in it is supposed to be located in the cavity of the sector gear that is from about 1:00 to 4:00 on the sector gear in your pic. Also there is a small flat/arched spring that is supposed to go under the snout of the rack under the teeth end. It pushes up on the rack as it slides back and forth and together those two springs keep the teeth of the gear and the rack in sink.
Here is a link to some very good pics and instructions that will make it easy to see what I'm talking about. Look about half way down and you will see the two springs and how they are used on pages 22 and 34-35: http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...ck_Rebuild.pdf

So I looked at it a little. The spring in my picture was how I found it after the cam over rode the rack. I put the cam back in the rack like it should be but had not put the spring back rite when I snapped the picture. I need to look for the other spring you mentioned. I believe I have it put together rite but the last tooth on the cam brakes and the big tooth on the cam jumps out of the rack.

Held,
Thanks for that link, I went to the wrecking yard today and got a "sector" out of a 89 check truck. It only has 5 teeth and I do believe the sixth tooth is important as my sixth tooth broke off and it is why it over rides the rack and then the key just spins. I am going to try to get one from the part numbers found in your link. I still need to figure out why there is not a stop for over riding this thing or why its not working on mine.

Rick,
My son and I were headed to the GTO nationals in Colorado this year and the damn collumn did its thing. I had to fix the thing in the dark at a camp site with limited tools, my 12 year old son holding the flash light. Not a lot of fun. Really its bad enough in my shop!

A GM dealer should be able to order that sector gear. I used to rebuild columns from stolen vehicles and that gear was available then.

Dealer for that odd part? Ask most dealers about that part and you get
a "DUH"............

Steering column services is the place hands down.................
Free online pics and exploded views and they have the stuff !

I needed a turn signal pivot arm piece and got the "DUH" from the GM parts counter folks.
A common busted part.
*To be fair..........Its for a old car*

The 6 tooth gear was discontinued a long time ago...most popular are 72-up 5 tooth.....you can change to a 5 tooth and should have no problem....you may need to adjust your ignition switch on top of your column or it may be worn out.
