Kyle,

I had my Bermuda Blue 4-dr sedan (post) LeMans at Norwalk this past year. It is an original factory M-20 4-speed car. I most likely will drive the Tempest next year. I'm rebuilding the TH400 as it lost 3rd this past fall. The 400 runs great and cruises nicely on the highway with 2.56 gears (2400 rpm at 70 mph).

Oh, I noticed that one! Unfortunately I didn't get to meet you. I commented to my friends that that was the nicest '70 4-door I had ever seen!

Very interesting. That's the crazy thing about trying to learn everything about a certain model of car; there's always curve balls like this. Maybe it's a plant specific thing, maybe it's an assembly screw up, maybe it's a case of "eh, we're out of Tempest panels, grab some for LeMans".

It must be a hardtop specific thing. I don't think they're specifically LeMans panels since there was never any LeMans badge installed in them. Every 2dr hardtop '70 Tempest I've ever seen has had them though (*cars that are original, I've seen many with buckets and GTO/Sport panels) I knew the 4drs were different, but I never realized that post cars had had a different panel.

Kyle & Tempest T-37,

Thanks for the compliments. It is a California car, but it has had its share of hard knocks. It has more filler than I care to mention. It was originally an Atoll Blue car with deluxe wheel covers.

On the 2-dr hardtop door panel topic, I see that you are indeed correct that Pontiac did use the same LeMans door panel without the LeMans emblem. I never knew that and learned something new today. I wonder if the 2-dr post coupe used the same panel. I imagine that they did.

Good question. The 40k mile LeMans Post Coupe I mentioned earlier in this thread has those panels, but it's a LeMans (so I guess that shouldn't be a surprise). Now the challenge is to find a Tempest Post with them!

I looked at and test drove this car back in the summer, Had my wife (no taste) not been along it would probably be in my garage now. I'm glad you got it, the owner was telling me at the time that he was thinking about putting a Chevy engine in it.

Oh, no way! So your wife's womanly sense didn't dig the green interior?

The seller is a super-cool guy. He mentioned putting a BBC in it, but in the end he said that he felt the car was too nice to do that. I think he was happy that it was going to a certified nut job for these cars. I told him that my daughter can sell it when I'm dead.

Oh, and for the record, my wife actually likes the green interior, so everything worked out. (And she's awesome).

I found a 2-dr post coupe Tempest picture of the door panel. This is a standard Tempest factory equipped with the 330 hp small valve 400 4-bbl motor, TH400 trans and 3.08 Safe-t-track rear end. This one has the Tempest style old at design, not the LeMans style. Very interesting.

That shot nicely shows the absence of dash vents due to it being a Post car which doesn't sport the Astro Ventilation. Those are the same door panels as my car.

What's the status of the car in the picture? Ironic that a plain Tempest could be equipped like that but then some GT-37s could come with a 350.

If I could go back in time, I'd order a Tempest Post sans decor group, Granada Gold, with color matched wheels, poverty caps, a 400, and. 4-speed.

Kyle, I'm not sure of the cars status these days. It was for sale a couple times on eBay for an outrageous BIN price and never sold. It is an unfortunate mess and somewhere in the SW.

To get the GT-37 option you first had to order a V-8. Then you could order it. Most just wanted the looks and not the go as insurance kicked in. Of course in '70 it had to be either a coupe or ht.

Really like the Gold Tempest.

Dennis

Thanks for posting those, but those aren't new to me unfortunately. Those were in the Craigslist ad I found during my search, so apparently the guy I bought it from just reused the pics!

I turned those stupid floor mats upside down. They were not helping the Green interior any!

No doubt! ...plus the flamefront is on the wrong end of the floormat (IMO)

Default My New '70 Tempest

This is pretty wild. I was just going through my old pictures and I cam across this picture that I had saved a couple years ago. I snagged it 'cause I love Tempest Post Coupes. Upon looking at it, I think it may be my car! I can't remember where I acquired it; somewhere online. It looks like it could be a green interior. Same trim and badging. Even the fender and hood panel alignment look the same. Obviously the wheels and hiked-up rear are different, but I guess a lot can happen in 46 years. I'd love to figure out where this image came from.
