Default Engine performance upgrade 1963 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

I own a stock 1963 Pontiac Catalina Convertible with a 389 w/2 bl carb. Its a tad slow and was thinking about some minor upgrades such as a 4 bl carb, manifold and cam. A buddy of mine works at advance auto parts and can get a discount. They sell edelbrock parts. Can anyone recommend any parts/upgrades.

A factory four barrel manifold and carb would be an easy and inexpensive upgrade, along with dual exhausts if you don't have them already. However, I'll guess the performance limiter is the slim jim transmission in your car (assuming it's an automatic.) They aren't the greatest for performance.

Melling SPC-7 cam and lifter kit to go with what Stuart said. If you do both of these things you will be forced to change your transmission. TH400 conversion or any 4 speed is the next step.

And - you should be in the old-guy big car forum with the rest of us.
