Surprised to see this FIrehawk go for what I consider to be cheap (given the miles and condition - 1 owner), but know that 4th gens aren't really highly regarded.

Seems like Chevelles and Camaros also do better (generally speaking) than their GTO and FIrebird counterparts.

It's a Mustang, they're just going to always be more desirable than Firebirds. Same thing with Chevelles and Camaro - they aren't necessarily better cars, but they're just more popular with the general public.

In the case of that particular Mustang, Fox body era cars have been getting very popular in recent years as people of the right age want to relive their youth, when those cars were the Big Thing on the street, and finding one today that hasn't been molested is difficult.

It depends on your perceived version of "true value".

Do you have an infatuated value, Barrett-Jackson value, or "asking prices" value or do you have a real life, cash in hand value.

Remember, a seller can ask whatever they want, doesn't mean after years of trying to sell, they get it. As well, an inebriated bidder with a camera in his face and all of his buddies back at home watching, is not a good guide either.

I’d think that $22,500 was strong money for an 18 year old Pontiac.

I agree that the Fox bodies were “king of the road” back in their day - I didn’t see that Pontiac that way.

A friend of mine is a “Ford lifer” - which is too bad, because he’s limited to driving junk. He had a fox body in the early 90’s when they were big. A few years ago, he got nostalgic and bought another. He sold it quick, saying “I had forgotten what a piece of crap that car was.”

To me, that mustang and others like it has(d) blah styling compared to F bodies. Then again I am biased. I almost bought a used '73 Mustang before I bought my Formula.

IMO…. Nothing against Fords but Mustangs, especially Fox bodies, are like assholes. Everybody has one. Its also the same line I used back in the 70's about '57 Chevys and Chevelles when people asked me why I chose a '65 GTO.

A 93 Cobra is a much more rare car. Fox bodies are EXTREMELY popular right now and seem to have hit their stride before the 4th gens.

There are also a lot of low mile Firehawks available. That being said- I would want 20k for my 2002 black Formula 6speed Firehawk and it has 85k on it.

I dont know that the FIrehawk brand name carries a lot of recognition outside of the Pontiac world. Hell Im not sure a lot of classic GTO owners could tell you what a 3rd or 4th gen Firehawk is. (Ill bet a 91 Firehawk would sell for more than $20k)


On the other hand, everyone recognizes that snake badge. I dont think its an apples to apples comparison.

FWIW, give me the 4th gen all day. Ill take mine in black though. Its odd that the Firehawk didnt get the big angry WS6 hood. That hood is the whole reason to buy a 4th gen.

We're all car guys so most of us know what a "snake badge" is.

But I think you'd be surprised at the number of people that don't know or care about a "snake".

I currently own both a GTO and a Mustang; both have advantages and disadvantages.

As far as value of anything today is concerned; the virus is certainly not helping values. If I were in the market for another car, I would be looking!

Lots of folks working on their cars; we are extremely busy with the manufacture of rebuilding kits.

What will the future bring? Who knows, I certainly do not.

Oh, and the highly modified V-8 GTO will blow the doors off of the factory stock turbo 4 Mustang, but the Mustang is more fun to drive.

However, in 1968 I special-ordered a Mustang, and a good friend special-ordered a GTO. I got a 390/4-speed; he got a 400/4-speed. He got higher rear gears. In the quarter, he won by a couple lengths. Beyond the quarter, I could run off and hide. Second worst mistake i have made regarding cars was trading that Mustang in the first gas shortage in 1973.

When I was in high school when the 5.0 Fox bodies were everywhere, they were THE car to have. Not even just among car guys, anyone who was even remotely into cars wanted "a Mustang." Those people are now approaching mid 40s and early 50s, so it makes sense that the car they wanted in high school is now something they're getting. GTOs and early Firebirds were priced out of that generation's (aka mine) hands by the time we were buying cars. We knew those cars were "cool" and "fast" compared to the majority of the '80s and early '90s anemic output, but they were too expensive and too hard to come by unless you were a rich kid or had a dad\uncle\aunt who had one that gave it to you (a 17 year old kid I used to work with at the grocery store had a '70 Buick GS 455 that was wicked sounding). The Mustangs were cheap and plentiful, and with a few parts from a catalog or taking it down to the local hot rod shop, could be made to perform pretty decently with that 5.0 without breaking the bank. We also used to make fun of the guys who would just slap 5.0 badges and other appearances onto their single exhaust cars (obviously a 6 cylinder), so idiots were plentiful then too just like back in the '60s and '70s.

The one thing that hasn't changed is the value of the Z28\SS\Trans Am\Firehawk. The majority of the guys I knew were ignorant of them or complained about how expensive they were. Those of us who knew the LS platform when it came out in '97-98 knew they were VERY potent performers and were ideally the car to have for serious racing and driving and would dust most Mustangs without a thought. But very few had the cash for such an expensive car (at the time in the mid '90s, a Mustang was a $16-18k car, the F-body was a $20k+ car) and, my personal favorite anecdote, most GM dealers were complete jerks to anyone who wanted to buy one under the age of 40. You see that reflected in the pricing of the auction. More people know and want a Mustang. Less people want the F-body.

The Mustang was always more popular than the GTO or Firebird if I remember right GTO most produced year was 1966 at just under 100,000 cars that year Mustang was about 600,000 cars. I love my Pontiacs but they will never be as popular as Fords or Chevrolet’s and now that they are not produced anymore that gape is going to get bigger and bigger.

Well thats true enough I guess, but in the context of people who are on a Bring a Trailer auction Im guessing everyone knows what a Cobra badge means. Im not sure 50% of the viewers wouldnt think a Firehawk badge was a fake that someone stuck on.

And the vast majority of those Mustangs were built with either a 120 HP 6 cylinder or 200 HP 289 2bbl V8.

All '66 GTO's had a 389 with either a 4bbl or three deuces with either 335 HP or 360 HP.

Only 31,000 Mustangs came with either the GT Equipment Group or the K code 289. The 289 with a 4bbl was only 225 HP and the K code had 271 HP.

Comparing Mustang production numbers to GTO production numbers is an exercise in futility because most Mustangs were targeted to, sold to or purchased for women.

It's the Fox body's time...a guy who was 18 years old in 1993 is 45 years old now, and is at the stage in life where he's comfortable in his career. His kids may have finally grown up and moved out on their own, and he finally has the time and financial ability to be able to drop a pile of money on the car he coveted in his youth but couldn't afford then.

Don’t forget the Fox body started in 79 and the 93 Cobra was the pinnacle of that body style.

That gives it almost a 10 year start over a Firehawk
