My pontiac guru's were stumped with the question of what Catalina's 2+2 stands for?

The basic description of a 2+2 vehicle calls for 2 adults + 2 passengers, usually referring to children.

To say a car was a 2+2 was a play on words to say it was a 2 seater (sports car) with room for 2 more. A car with a 2+2 option also calls for a 2-door body instead of a 4-door.

Of course, Pontiac using 2+2 on the Catalina is like calling an 18 wheeler a super-size pickup truck!

The 2+2 was started as an option in 1964.
Out of 257,768 Catalinas produced in 1964, only 7,998 carried the 2+2 option. The standard engine in the 2+2 was a 389 cid 283 bhp V8. The elimination of the previous year's Super Duty engines left three 421 cid V8s available, rated at 320, 350, and 370 bhp.

In 1965, Car and Driver tested a Catalina 2+2 and recorded a top speed of over 130 mph and a 0-60 time of just 3.9 seconds.

In 1966, the 2+2 became it's own model, based on the Catalina. This would be the only year for the 2+2 to be it's own vehicle, and not only an option.

In 1967, the 2+2 became only an option again on the Catalina, and was the last year of the 2+2.

I always thought it meant I ate 2 Mustangs for breakfast + 2 Chevys for lunch.
