Default Bill Porters design influences

Bill porter recently held a seminar and discussed his design influences...

Here is one for the sheetmetal on the 70-72, and judge stripes enhanced the fender quarter reliefs...

I can see the fender reliefs, and the lower fender vent (1972), but imagine a Judge with gullwing doors..........

Maybe this is where the styling cue for the 1964 GTO fender mounted mirror came from.

I'm interested in this seminar he recently held, would you have any links to it? Did he say the '55 300SL actually influenced his later designs? It's a shame GM didn't allow them to keep their old sketches when they were done with them, trashing them instead. Read about how they would smuggle some of them out using false bottom boxes.

Was a great seminar and learned many things.

He talked with a slide presentation.

He had lot of sketches and went thru a year by year evolution of design at Pontiac.

The original name for the firebird was road runner and even showed the Pontiac badge design.

The guy who developed that went to mopar and we all know the history...

Also, never once met Jim Wangers during the Judge concept design process. Worked with JD a lot and others.

That Pontiac "Road Runner" emblem would be very interesting to see!

Mr Porter is very interesting to listen to and he lives to talk about the cars. So if you have a chance to see or talk with him don't pass it up.

I always figured the 70-72 side body shape came from those MB's, not just the Gullwings but in the 60's the much higher volume 190's had that same look, they were put in the spotlight in the late 60's when trendy Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (father of our current twit PM) was often seen in a 190 convertible showing the media how cool he was. Much like his son he was a trust fund boy, so lots of time to polish his coolness.

If you look at the Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia, you'll see from where they may have evolved.

A more direct comparison to the Fiat would be a '58 Impala. And the shape? Volvo P1800.
