Default 1968 Hubcap Center Question

Hi all,

I have a 68 LeMans that appears to be really original. The factory hubcaps on the car have red centers. I also have a set of the same hubcaps (1968) with black centers. The centers haven’t been replaced on either set. Is there any rhyme or reason for which cars got red centered hubcaps and which got black?

I know there is general consensus on Rally II center cap colors. Is this the same for hubcaps? It’s weird to me that they are the same cap.

I think it was Red A-Body & Black B-Body.

'69 didn't offer this style cover.

I stand corrected - 1968 cap but for different body style. :-)

Looking at the 1968 brochure it clearly shows the fullsize having black centers and the A body having red. No Fbirds in this brochure but I'd imagine they'd share the A body wheelcovers like in 67-69.

The Swiss cheese caps! They were the Custom wheelcover in 68 only (not offered on the full-size). The custom wheelcover option was typically twice the price of the deluxe cover (40ish versus 20ish dollars). Apart from having a different style the main advantage was they fully covered the whole wheel while the deluxe covers left about 1/2” of the wheel showing all the way around.
