So the head CCs are pretty much what I took a stab at.

It sounds like you are rebuilding the shortblock? If yes (with stock rods and new pistons or the forged pieces), strive for .040" quench through the combination of piston depth in/out-the-hole and head gasket compressed thickness. With your 8.5 to 1 compression the cam Cliff recommended or the 2801 would provide a soft lope that you want, but slightly hurt low end torque, but not by a bunch. If you run RA exhaust manifolds, also get the mandrel headpipes to tie into the rest of your exhaust, even if it is a 2 1/4" beyond the headpipe length. The exhaust gases will have cooled enough to not be restricted by the smaller pipe 4' down-stream.

I'd wager you're looking at an honest 330 hp/430 lb-ft with you combo.

Almost the same motor and gearing as the one in the 81 TA i put together for the kids to drive to high school. it originally had my 78s original stock 6X-8 motor in it with an XE 262 on a 112 LS. I replaced it with a 400 with 6X-4s originally 93cc, milled 0.050 but smoothed the chamber ridges so still measures 93cc. Port matched, valve pockets cleaned up. Ferrera 5.09 D port valves. HS roller rockers.RA 2.5 manifolds dual cats(had to pass a sniffer back then)I used a Summit 2801 in it. Performer intake port matched Q jet. nice sound at idle ran good. With a super tight factory convertor ran a bogging 14 second. But i added a 13' Continental convertor -just never made to back to the track. That made a world of difference though can spin the tires now!

Awesome!! Thats a high 13!! I had a 2801 I put in a stock 400 in 1996, the first poncho I ever built in my dads garage. Ran great a sold it to my boss in 2005 and still running today. I just hate buying no name cams. Im gonna look at the specs.

That 2801 cam along with the 2800 and 2802 are reboxed and sold by a good number of cam companies.

They’re good grinds.

I distinctly remember one ‘77 -‘78 T/A that was featured in one of the HPP magazine shootouts running a 455 equipped with the 2801 cam and 3.23 gears. It was clocking 12.90s in the 1/4, pretty impressive performance for that little cam.
