Hot Rod internet article
Andy Warhol said everyone would get their 15 minutes of fame, but apparently it wasn’t my turn. Great little article on our day at Westech Dyno with a GTO club member’s street engine I recently built. Nice article but no mention of owner or builder.
Here's the Hot Rod internet article: https://www.hotrod.com/articles/462-...r-400-westech/ Dave supplied the round port heads and the '69 cast iron manifold done to Cliff's specs, and Cliff supplied the carburetor. Butler supplied the forged 4.25" rotating assembly with Ross pistons. Ken Crocie designed and supplied the cam. We used Johnson Hy-Lift hydraulic roller lifters with pin oiling, and these were super quiet. Completed the assembly with a set of Crower 1.6 stainless rockers and some Crower short polylocks to get the valve covers fitting with only a thick gasket. Actually would have fit with the 1/8" gasket but future snug-downs might eventually get too close to the polylocks. Engine was happy idling way down to 650 and will be dead stable idling at 800 RPM or a little less. There were some higher runs that they didn't post with the highest being 517.9 at 5,600 RPM.

A lot of oil pressure.

Had that discussion with Steve the owner of Westech on previous occasions and haven't made any headway in convincing him gauge is reading high. On my run stand I have electric and mechanical gauges and they read 70 PSI startup and about 62 pounds after reaching operating temperature (30w oil on break-in stand and 10w30 on dyno). Oil pump is a blue printed Butler 60 pound pump without the spacer washer they include with the pump.
I've seen several other engines that were known to have standard oil pressure that registered very high on the same dyno cell.

Thanks for the link. Very impressive combo. Those numbers are fantastic. The vision to build a iron intake quad street engine that is very tame / docile shows the talent involved.
I forwarded the link to some Chev , Mopar guys. My response back was disbelief. The Quadrajet boggles their mind. Note I have the same pump and my oil pressure on the Dyno was 90 and after temp 60. As mentioned be nice to know the builder. |

nice build & numbers & thats cool you got into a hotrod article! i have a very similar combo that did almost exactly the same hp# & a little more torque. mine is a 400 based 467 with stock out of the box 72cc E-heads, forged 4.25 crank & disched ross piston for 10.7 comp & OF 1.0 cam. same SD ported intake & cliff built carb with a suntuned HEI.
we dyno'd it with no real break in besides a quick run in to verify no leaks & zero tuning, everything was as supplied & just bolted on. this was on the same model dyno & is said to be very "tight" & im sure with more break in & some tuning it would have went a little higher. also had a edelbrock mech fuel pump that was not supplying sufficient fuel on the dyno, street & track. changed to a robbmc 1100 after the dyno & made noticeable improvements on the street & times at the track. best times so far are 11.2-11.3 @ 121+ & been 123+mph with a th400 & 3200 continental converter & 3.23 gears. but still has some fuel starvation & traction issues im trying to work out... just proves these basic builds can easily make 500+hp & run mid to low 11's yet drive anywhere on the street on pump gas. |

Good Job Mick, another fine example of some Pontiac torque and 500+hp on a mild build

Nice to see something other then Chevy LS, Chevy big block, Chevy small block, and occasional Ford in Hot Rod magazine. I love the author's comment about seeing less Pontiac's than Mopars. It's because you guys rarely look for them. I see a lot of Pontiac's at the Syracuse Nationals and other events. The power from this engine is impressive and I love the quadrajet.

We've had a couple of engines dyno'd at Vrbancic and have always been very happy with them. A little less expensive also.
