picked up a bunch of part today .got these rear speakers, guy told me that the are early trans am type the were used on the line . anyone can help i.d these

I don’t think a rear speaker got a cover like that until ‘72. I think all ‘70-‘71 custom trim cars and base trim cars with a rear speaker option got the mesh package tray.

ok so would the pointed studs be correct

I have never see n the pointed studs.

That is the cover style used on (?)1973+ though.

me too .the guy said it was used on the assembly line to make it a quick install . they just have to bang it in the package tray cardboard . i guess it make senses

I agree with this...basically. But remember some rear speaker kits that were sold to dealers to be dealer installed used a metal grille at least similar to the one pictured.
But factory line installed, don't think so.

I also have never seen the spiked version, only threaded. I went through the early GM part numbers for speaker covers, none were unaccounted for, if that means anything.

While the general oval shape and stamping is very similar to the common '72-81 version, I haven't seen one with the speaker holes closely following the speaker shape with no holes in corners.

I have the same covers, but the studs aren't spiked like that.

Did someone sharpen them to a point to help with installation? I could see it being easier to push them through the package tray and get the nuts started with a pointed stud.

i have two of these speakers. all the studs are the same ,if the were done by hand they would be all different . they were definitely done by a machine look at the photo. i believe they were done by the factory

The pointed studs on those grilles look a lot shorter than the 2nd gen grilles i have used or seen, they dont look like they will go all the way through the package tray trim and metal section then still have enough threads for the speaker to bolt in. Unless its the angle of the pics?

I have factory speaker grilles in 3 cars, 72 firebird that had the single rear 6x9, as well as 78 and 81 t/a's, the grilles have 1-1.5" long full studs.

i was told buy this guy that they were not screwed in .They would just give the a punch with there hand and that was it . not saying he is correct ,buy it is a weird speaker grill

maybe the person who put the grille in place was someone else, but I guarantee, they WERE connected.

The cover sinched the package tray to the rear dash, then underneath, a speaker was connected to the four studs, and the speaker cover was attached to the bottom of the speaker.

Here is what they are supposed to look like from underneath.

I think it's quite probably that someone modified the studs...

But, maybe that's a unique cover that came in a very specific kit???

Thats what I was saying, the grille studs go through the package tray and the speakers bolt to the studs. Not aware of any 2nd gen using a different factory arrangement for the rear speakers/grilles.

Those grilles may be from a different car, or they are modified and the speakers attached a different way without using the grilles?

Do your covers have the same blanks in each corner with no speaker holes? Or yours are just regular speaker covers like the rest?
