Ring and Pinion Spacer??
Hi, I have a 79 trans am with a posi 2:73 rear end. I purchased a 3:42 ring and pinion. My brother seems to think I need a spacer to make this work. Ani ideas? He said something about my carrier is a 2 and needs to be a 3.
Thanks for any help, Scott |

you either need a series 3 carrier or ring gear spacer, getting the right carrier although more expensive is the best way to go, eaton, auburn,GM all have posi carriers even this board in the parts forsale section has them once in a while

I believe you have a series 3, not sure. Is there a big 8 or 9 cast into the side of the 3rd member? If it is a 8 you have a series 3, 9 you guessed it and will need a spacer.
Try to find the part number on the posi. That wull be a for sure answer. Google that part number and you will get your answer.

You could ask my cousin what he thinks about about not buying the proper carrier and instead using a ring gear spacer, but you can't because he's dead! He died instantly when the bolts of his ring gear spacer sheared off, locked up the rear end and sent him off into the woods!
Do yourself a favor and get the proper posi carrier.

If it has a 8.5" gear and is a 2.73 ratio, it is good to a 4.10 gear. Hope this helps

Only 2 carriers for an 8.5"... 2.41 and 2.56 are the high geared one and everything else all the way to 5.57 gear fits the 2.73 and lower geared carrier... 5.38 and 5.57 gear require a special crosspin but the carrier is the same...
