I always thought they were rust traps.

Not if they were put on correctly Shijune001. My 69 still has it's original. You just need to take care of them.

SMS in Oregon is the best, uses NOS material. Slow service though and make sure the position of the seams below the back window is done at the right place.

Second the SMS. I’ve got interior upholstery, and vinyl top on order. Ordered Feb and hope to have by December. It’s pricey but it’s correct

Is NOS like that better than having a replacement top custom made at an upholstery shop?
And I’m curious to know the ballpark of “pricey” in this situation… |

Is is best option out there if you’re looking for originality. The material is NOS- same that was used at factory. SMS has original patterns and dimensions for exact car as far as seams, so should be correct. My vinyl top for a 69 Bonneville was $495. I’m sure some upholstery shops could get it very close to original appearance for less $$.

And yes, SMS will get you the right material the factory used. Just make sure you paint and seal that roof before you put one back on!!! |

It may be worth doing a little legwork...check around for reputable auto upholstery shops in your area (you haven't included your location in your signatur, so unfortunately no one here can provide recommendations) and visit them to talk about your situation. Have them show you a sample of the material they would use, ask about the seams, etc., and then get an estimate of the cost.

Try to check out newstalgiaparts also. They offer replacement ones.
