Yes, I too have been a proponent for 20 years of using Moog or other springs and modifying them as need instead of buying "performance" springs. I have always felt they were replacement springs that may have had a coil removed, but more often than not just another application that fits.

What I have now is a bit rough, and has virtually zero weight transfer when I try to drag race the car. I am sure the Bilstein shocks don't help, and while the setup is probably good for curves, the tires and front tires negate any chance I have of taking advantage of that.

My biggest obstacle to getting a second set or rims and tires is space...I just don't have any room to store any. So, that is why I am considering new springs, possibly airridepro or others, just to have something that works better and perhaps offers adjustability.

How are the cc501's for drag racing? Are they soft enough at the onset to allow sufficient squatting in the rear to put some weight on the back to aid traction?

Thanks.

13 inches might be the right number for your car. That 65 rear end was in a 4 door car. They also advertize the CC501 as a replacemnt spring for a 67-70 4 door. Getmygoat should be able to measure the springs that came out of his convertable if he did not throw them away already.

I'm hurting for space in my garage too but decided to pick up a 2nd set of wheels/tires. Check out this tire rack I recently purchased.

Thanks Maurader, but with 2 young boys, bikes, workbenches, tools, etc, I don't even have that much room...and there's no room to expand.

I'm stuck for at least 10 more years.

I just measured the coil wire diameter and found it to be .565" diameter.

Ken, would the cargo coil, cc-510, have a softer initial rate even though the wire diameter is larger? I want/need some weight transfer at the initial launch on the dragstrip. I am wondering if, even though the wire is larger, the lower pitch (coils per foot) would allow some give first, then increase rate as the pitch increases...meaning as the compression goes more toward the tighter coils?

Is this the proper way of thinking, or am I amiss?

I have a factory rear spring chart. As soon as I can figure out how to get a good picture, I will post it. The part numbers translate different, it has the dimensions. I also have a factory blue print showing how to install the rear springs correctly.

I just put the CC501 springs on my 1972 LeMans vert and I'm not impressed. The tight coils at the top are almost all touching and the ride height is exactly the same as the old springs. As soon as the weather breaks I'll take a pic.

I have a set of variable rate coils in a El Camino. The tops of the springs bunch up in that too, that's the way they are made. Look at a set of stock rear springs and you will see the coils bunching up on top of those also.

Default 4 months later

It took me four months, but I thought I'd return to this thread to post pics of my GTO with the new coil springs.

First pic is from four months ago, with the cc507s. Way too high.

The second pic is today, with the new cc651 - much better, perhaps perfect?

The third pic is a few minutes later with a full tank of gas.

Default Here she sits

I haven't had her on the road long as we just got the motor back in and now she has a broken lifter but the goat is looking alright in the stance department now.

285/40x17 on 10" Boyd wheels (junkyard dawgs) with 5.5" offset
245/45x17 on 8" wheels in the front 4.5" offset

cargo springs in the rear, hotchkis "big block" springs in the front

no rubbing issues

If anything she sits a hair too high in the back but I think it's alright. I'll post more when I get the motor situation taken care of. Maybe one with a girl in a bikini as no one seems to do that anymore!

I'd try to keep about a half tank in her!

Default CC501

Here's my '72 with CC501 coil springs on. The rear tire is a 275-60-15 and fronts are 235-60-15. This is a perfect ride height for me.
