The trim tag on the pink one I posted years ago would have been an 06A or B.

I checked the factory original PQ TH400 torque convertor today to see if it had any ink stamps "5-5"...it did!

But, did you check the vacuum modulator? Here was the one in mine.

HFR, how about a 0026 (date code - 26th day of 1970?) 8623365 EP HRD.

Interesting! I've never before seen a factory installed modulator that was adjustable.

Thanks Dennis. Jan 26th 1970. I was kind of commenting about the stripe (from other thread). BTW, I think those were on the shorter, adjustable units. Was hoping my B meant something.
Ric, no longer adjustable. Set at the factory then welded or some other form of locking it in place.

Mike, Does your VM have any paint stripes? I didn't see any on ours, but maybe didn't look in the right spot...?

No, that's what I was saying, no stripe(s) or paint dabs on it. Stripe(s) were on the short VM's.

I know this is relatively insignificant and minutia but, I finally found the correct dash insert 'bird' emblem to replace the incorrect 'arrowhead' that was really bugging me for some reason...must have be that exposed pilot hole. It needs a good cleaning and chrome detailing, but it's in pretty good shape.
We'll be swapping back in the original PQ trans as soon as the weather allows and finally get her on the road again (TA Nat's here we come...if it happens, that is). Dennis |

Formula Weight...Actual vs. AMA vs. Title vs. Advertised
Has anyone weighed their Formula's? I'm trying to calculate/guesstimate the weight (curb weight) of my Formula and found the title lists 3536 lbs; the factory brochure lists 3585lbs (assuming no options); and the AMA Specifications list 3571 lbs for the base Formula 400 without options, but full fluids (fuel, coolant, etc.)...within 49 lbs of each other and 3564 lb average weight.
The AMA weights for the options on the Formula are 44 lbs for the M40 trans; 30 lbs for power steering; 10 lbs for power brakes; 14 lbs for the RAIII engine; and 7 lbs for radio. The car also has center console (10 lbs?), rear seat speaker (2 lbs?), and deluxe interior (8 lbs?), so guessing another 20 lbs total for the unlisted options. This brings the option total to 125 lbs to add to the base model weight for 3696 lbs AMA (3661 lbs title/3710 brochure). Checking out the Pure Stock Drags weights of 2nd Gen Firebirds (both TA & Formulas) they range all over the place. Obviously, some cars seem to have gone through suspicious weight reductions. There haven't been any '70 Formula 400's yet, but there was a similarly equipped '71 Formula 400 that Steve Courter brought in 2015 and it weighed 3714 lbs with driver. Removing the driver weight (I'd say Steve weighs about 150 lbs wet) brings it down to 3564 lbs with probably a half tank of gas and w/o the spare tire & jack. I'm guessing 3664 lbs +/- with a full tank and spare/jack (+100 lbs) for the curb weight. That seems about right to say around 3814 lbs with a 150 lb driver. Maybe Larry (Formulajones) can 'weigh' in on what his '70 Formula weighs? Dennis Last edited by SD455DJ; 04-06-2021 at 07:22 AM. |

My 70 Formula with 3 speed manual tranny, no options except PS/PB weighed 3650 pounds without me. (or jack/tire in trunk)
My friend who had a 70 Chevelle 396, always claimed my car weighed a lot less than his car. We weighed them at the same time/scale and his weighed 3600 pounds! (he was not happy) This was also with Rally wheels and G70 tires. (later had Keystones and L60 tires)

Thanks John for responding back! 3650 lbs without the spare/jack and assuming a half tank of gas...maybe 3750 lbs curb weight...WOW! I realize the 2nd Gen Birds were around heavier than their comparably optioned 1st Gen brothers, but it must be around 250 lbs more. It's interesting to see that the cast iron case M13 3-speed trans was 22 lbs heavier than the M20/M21 4-speeds.
How did your car run btw? RAIII? Dennis |

400 WT (non-RA)
No limited slip either. (3.55 gear) Ran low 8's in 1/8th mile, usually spinning all the way. (street tire) Later on put a RA III and 4 speed in it. Night and day difference. (BTW around 1975/76 time frame)

Are low 8's in the 1/8th like mid13's in the 1/4? If so, that was a good running Formula...headers? Other mods? What did it rum with the RAIII/4-spd?
It's funny that '70 SS 396/454 Chevelle's also run the gammit weight-wise with 400 lb swings at the Pure Stocks. 3600 lbs is on the lighter side for sure. Dennis |

Yes, it was with headers. (forgot that part, later added a Fireball cam )
Yes, probably low 13's. Could be better because once in 3rd it ran great. (hookwise) My buddy and I were about equal. He had a posi and can't remember if he had a lower gear. He had headers also. Then we started the making more HP thing. No 1/4 mile times, but was running 7.000000 could never get the 6 second run in the 1/8th. Then it was time for chassis/car/engine parts. Actually think I did go to Indy once and it ran a 11.0x time.

John, Any pictures of the Formula? That was really making great power to run low 12's! Was that with a 455?

It's 3690 lbs. without a driver. I'm 210 lbs so it's 3900 lbs. going down track, it's a friggin tank. Maybe I need to go on a diet That's without the spare tire stuff in the trunk and a full tank of gas. Mine is a RAIII with 400 turbo. Has power steering and power brakes, console, style trim, rally II wheels, has a radio of course, and that's about it for options that I can think of that add weight. Not sure how that computes with your weight break down. I've done no weight reduction on the car other than removing the spare tire. It does have a complete 2 1/2" mandrel bent Pypes exhaust system on it, which is probably a tad heavier than the stock exhaust system was. When I put aluminum wheels on it for giggles it weighed 3650 lbs. That alone was worth 40 lbs. LOL Those daggum rally II wheels are heavy! |
