The Chief heard my plea
Guess I know what I'm doing this week end...
In retrospect its been mostly cold up to this point, so I likely would have been sitting on this anyway, Yea lets go with that Joe, Yes it's a spray bomb DE 1651 Cast Coat Iron. I've used it in the past on smaller detail items and liked how it preformed so went full on this round. It has a decent dark metallic appearance under certain lighting.

FINALLY...
...Head was out for just under a month glad I planned on this.
WE NOW RESUME OUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING The reversing process is underway. It's funny how we can do these things many times over and then still forget the simplest of details. This drives home the importance of pictures/Videos, Tagging and Bagging all bits and pieces.

CAM HOUSE DETAILING;
Getting ready to detail the Cam House and Belt Cover.
Something I never really gave much thought into but upon a "re"-review of some old magazines/pictures of early engines. It seems the housing came out in 1966 with two variations of painting. I've always modeled my engine after the second image but the third and fifth are a possibility?? Anyhow something to think about while I wait for better weather/temperatures to do this.

I vote for red around the PMD, I like little spots of red here and there under the hood on these cars for some reason.

TIMING is everything...
I was asked about my set up in as far as timing.
In the past I have run points but over the last 5+ years have the Per-Tronix 1162A. Being fortunate to have access to an Old School SUN-Distributor machine. I have my dist set up with points then switch out with the PT kit, And run a stock coil and Vac advance. This has always been within the factory 5-BTDC Ign and approx 10 on Vac. There has been some past discussions of PT issues/Failures, but luckily have had nothing but positive experiences with it. So I would suggest this conversion. This time around I'll be using the SB sprocket which is long over due and likely necessary since we did take a bit off the head surface. I hope this gets me the most bang for my spark Regrettably I didn't measure the Flepro head gasket so, not sure what that adds back to the loss of surface. And will add, that a fellow Cammer ran into an issue with the alignment dowel pins standing proud of the gasket after some head surfacing and had issues with sealing. I don't have all the details but this stuck in my head as something to consider and took an equal amount off my pins just because This all comes into play as PMD didn't consider future machining and/or any possibility of adjustment. FYI: Different length 5/16 dowels are avail if needed. Anyhow I'll keep you posted as I get the cam back on...

Home Stretch...
...Running like a Clock., an Old Clock but a Clock none the less
Few more detailing items then onto the AC system. Took a bit longer then planned but since the weather hasn't made up it's mind I OK with this. SEE YOU ON THE STREETs!

After several driving sessions it looks like the exhaust manifold will need a different cast iron coating, Likely back to the Flat Flame Proof.
Should have been a no brainer but took a chance on the lesser temp. Oh well what fun is it if everything works out the first time

UGH...
...Well with just a few good jaunts under the "Belt" looks like the head gasket isn't going to cooperate,
I have a replacement "BEST" Graphite on order, but may just try a re-torque in the meantime. I'll let you know what I find.

Well I took the week off to re-connect with my daughter who returned from Rome.
Today I decided I would make an attempt to check and re-torque the head bolts. Since my Gasket isn't in yet I figured WTH, it was a crap shoot but what's another 4 hours tearing it up Sadly my efforts did not yield satisfaction and I will lift the head again The only good thing is no machine work this go round just my time and back. I'm at a loss other then to suspect the alignment dowels, even though we cut the OE down But thinking they may be the issue. I plan to just use a set of the 1/2" I bought like I should have the first time However I can also address the manifold paint again so what the hey I'll Be Back!

Hey Jeff, When I painted my intake & exhaust manifold I did it in the Duplicolor High Heat engine blue. As it heated up the exhaust turned a nice silver. Still looks good 6 weeks later.... Just a thought !

Yea I was on the fence weather to go back to a FULL stock look or maintain my previous minor creative freedoms My plan is to clean up and re-shoot with VHT Flame Proof like I should have the first time.

A FULL DAY OF WRENCHING.
Had been away for a week and half and 8 am decided it was time to get'er done.
Humidity level were outstanding, so I managed to apply a low pressure wash to everything under the hood while I put it all back together AGAIN. Install shorter alignment dowels, CHECK! Install composite head gasket, CHECK! Bleed off tappets AGAIN, CHECK! RE-Clean all gasket surfaces, CHECK! Climb into bay to be sure to lower head straight down, CHECK! Torque head bolts in steps and confirm with back up wrench to be sure, CHECK. Finish second cup of coffee and take two back & body before the stiffness sets in, CHECK! Proceed with cam house installation, CHECK. Check timing alignment and install belt lock down the SB Sprocket, CHECK! Re-Install manifolds & Carb with all related hardware, CHECK. Re-Install Alt & PS pump, CHECK! Re-Connect all hoses, belts and wires related, CHECK! Time 12:45, LUNCH! Choke down a BLT, CHECK! Check and top off all fluids, CHECK! Clear, FIRE! Happy to say I just returned from testing on and off all day and all is well. Less a minor exhaust sealing issue at the flange to manifold and carb adjustment to be completed tomorrow am. Rain just got here as well as the stiff shoulder. I NEED A BEER! Cheers!

Can you elaborate more on this step?
"Bleed off tappets AGAIN, CHECK!" I've just made sure they are springy, plopped them in, then when the engine was assembled primed the oiling system with a drill.

TAPPET BLEEDING
Every-time you lift the cam they should be drained/bled down.
Just basically squeezing the oil out so they're not pumped up. It's just a very slow process, using a large double handle screw clamp. One at a time... Just wrapped up the exhaust leak and will go back out after some chow. Cheers
